Cooling issues? Not anymore

Hmm. Do i trust some company blog ...or Toyota?

I see an issue with distilled water alone, but when you mix it with a coolant designed to go with distilled water, then that changes the situation.

 

Sounds good. Interested for this. Especially if it has a manual over ride switch. OFF is awesome for the few water crossings.

 

Considering it says mix it with plain water which is different than distilled, then says demineralized or distilled that's contradictory. By the way if you read the blog post it talks about using demineralized as compared to distilled but you do you. I'll go on my experience and what I've seen and read from being in the industry. I'll never use and never have used distilled in my vehicles yet have seen radiators, engines, water pumps, etc. eaten apart from distilled water being mixed.

 

I'd love to see more of what you've read in the industry, especially since you think Toyota, world renowned for their reliability, is wrong.

Besides, once you mix the antifreeze concentrate with the distilled water, whatever minerals that were in the antifreeze are now in the mixture. It is no longer distilled water at that point. Starting from a baseline of zero minerals and adding the right ones, versus starting with whatever minerals comes out of my tap, is a far more reliable strategy in my book.

Aw come on, we're not clogging up anything and I'm genuinely curious. This isn't about me, this is about figuring out what is the right thing to do.

My experience with tap water in radiators has never been positive, there's just too much crap in it in a lot of places. When you post up a link saying NEVER USE DISTILLED WATER, and it *directly* contradicts what the manufacturer states, I get curious. Besides, you said you could post more links....so do that.

 

How about using deionized water?

 

the manual override is to command on when the drive wants to..... to command off you will have to put a relay in the power line

 

You want to see bad water come to my house... its pulled from a rock quarry not far away so the KH is off the chart on my testing kit (its so high the gauge maxes out), then they add so much chlorine to it that when people water their lawns, the whole neighborhood smells like a swimming pool.

I cant use the water in my aquariums because of how bad it is, even after I treat it, its still lethal to my fish. I have to get water from the store or let it sit in a bucket for 2 weeks.

 

I've been using tap water in radiators for years as well. Not once have I ever seen issues stem from the fact that I used tap water. That whole distilled and de ionized water only in radiators crap is crap. The system just performs as it is designed to without issues.. ever.

We got a lot of superstitious people on this forum. Torque spec the air filter housing clamp to 20 ft lbs because the manual says so, only use 50/50 coolant mix with distilled water only or else your engine will explode, make sure you use anti seize on your spark plugs... Come on now.

 

If you re-read what I posted, I never said never use tap water. I said that I haven't had good experience with it.

I was rebutting someone who said never to use *distilled* water.

Tap water can be just fine - but it isn't always, depending on where you're at.

 

There is truth to this actually.

In my general region the tap water isn't very harsh and you can definitely drink from it but it will have a very mild mineral like taste to it.. some areas may have to deal with very harsh tap water which absolutely requires filtration to just be drinkable... In this case, I would probably say, if the water is not potable without heavy filtration, don't put it in your cooling system.

 

For those saying to use ratios (say 70/30 or 80/20) other than the OE premixed (50/50 or 60/40 whatever it is) have you noticed pre-mature water pump failure? I would suspect that the lubricity would be far less and may wear out the water pump bearings and seals faster?

I may be completely wrong, which is why I am asking. But I know that 4.7L have been known to have pre-mature water pump failures due to poor quality coolant but seem to do fine with Toyota LLC (red and even pink). Which is why I use Toyota in pretty much everything I have had, even my old GTP's.

@Deo taco that camaro is going to be insane! I think thats the first time I have seen carbon brakes on a classic car that will actually be driven. lol Are you building it for auto-x or just an all around amazing car? Also curious, are you running the full corvette drivetrain with the rear mounted transaxle?

No trans axle. the cost to change the body and the torque length were not worth it.

THe trans axle length aka wheel base is too long. so to shorten the system (torque tube) it costs too much money. add the cost to modify the body to bolt the trans axle it just isnt worth it. im running a currie turn 9 9in with a ride tech 4 link in the rear .

 

Ahhhhh, now I'm tracking!! Still the results should be insane! I don't think I've seen carbon brakes on a classic yet.
