I've been roasting for a couple years. I still do it by hand, using a stove top "popcorn popper" on a hotplate outside so the smell doesn't get into the house...lol

I primarily use a Bonavita brewer, since it's been certified by the Specialty Coffee Association.

    Here's a link: https://sca.coffee/certified-home-brewer

Generally speaking, a brewer has to reach a certain temperature, which I believe is somewhere in the neighborhood between 190-205 F. Per their link: Behmor, Bonavita, Breville, Braun, Brim, Bunn, Cuisinart, Ninja, OXO, Paderno, and Technivorm make at least one model that meets their criteria.

Also recommend you take a look at the Sweet Maria's website: https://www.sweetmarias.com/
It has a lot of good information on brewing, roasting, beans, etc.

    Brew free!

I was buying all my roasted online from Happy Mug, but I found 2 local shops. One of them has a killer espresso blend that I’ve been drinking way too much of. I need to go pick up another bag probably today as I’m nearly out

I'm a Bonavita user as well. Recently acquired a basic Saeco X-small super-automatic espresso machine, which I really love. Both machines do their thing pretty well for my tastes and are budget friendly. The Saeco is said to be sensitive to oily beans, so I may get back into home-roasting, something which I gave up a few years ago after my Gaggia machine went down.

I read through here yesterday, some of you guys have killer setups, I feel like an amateur over here with my moka pot and aeropress. I've been drinking drive coffee lately (especially their nitro since its been so hot out), if you havent tried them i highly suggest you give them a shot. Also have a couple bags of bones coffee for when I want something different.

I use a basic stainless steel popcorn popper. The reason I went with stainless steel instead of the cheaper aluminum is that I heat it with a inductive "hot plate," and I do my roasting outside. I keep this setup by the back door.

    upload_2020-8-29_13-1-8.jpg

    Very basic, but it works.

We need to keep this thread going. Here are freshly roasted beans, right out of the pot:

    upload_2020-8-31_10-39-14.jpg

A few burned beans. Guess I would put them in the "Starbucks" category...lol

Nice. I meant to respond on Saturday but I checked this right before I went for a surf and forgot about it.

I’d love to get my own roaster, but I’m the type to go all in on something. I also don’t really have the space for one right now. I’ll probably get one in a couple years when I get a bigger house. I have a local shop that I’ve been getting my espresso blend from for the last few months and have been getting a few of their bags for pour over too. It’d definitely save me a lot of money roasting my own beans seeing as I’m spending about $20/bag every week and a half just for espresso

I haven't tried it all, but so far, my vote is for Trader Joe's Medium Roast. The wife makes me 2 cups every morning in her 'Hello Kitty' coffee pot.

Try the Trader Joes Organic Bolivian Blend. Its a Medium Dark Roast and it's delicious. Think it runs for about 7.99 a can. Its my go to for everyday drinking during the week, then I hit a little espresso blends on the weekend.

My biggest issue with store bought coffee is you never know when it was roasted. I only buy coffee with “roasted on” dates

I don't care when it was roasted, as long as it smells good and tastes good.
