What are my options for a fuel injector upgrade-- 2.4 L engine

Hi,

I figure my stock injectors, at 23 years old and 182k miles, might be something I'd like to replace.

I understand the originals have one spray hole and are kind of crude.

I'd like to do a straight plug-n-play swap, same flow rate, but get something better. I see a lot of sketchy looking hype on Fleabay and so forth, and I don't want to drop coin on something that wll run the same or worse than what I have.

Recommendations?

Take injectors out and manually clean or have them serviced professionally.
You can't get better injectors than what came from factory and aftermarkets melt down fast.
Save yourself the trouble of redesigning the wheel.

I went with the Intermotor injectors from RockAuto. They appear to be exactly the same as the OEMS I took out, minus the cracks.

Be careful though - there are counterfeit injectors on the market and they cause headaches. Don't cheap out.

 

These purport to be remanufactured DENSOs with 12 holes. Would these work? Would they be an improvement?

They're knock offs. Chinesium counterfeits... I can tell you from personal experience that ANY seller selling "new" or "remanufactured" injectors for less than $50 PER injector, it's gunna be fake.

Bad things will happen when you install fake injectors. @CS_AR and @Running Board Man can tell you other than myself

 

but if you do go that route, I'll take your used OEM ones you take out... I've been looking for a set of used OEM injectors that I can pay to have rebuilt.


Since you're a 97 you're probably going to have the brown injectors. Cheapest "upgrade" is going to be from rock auto.. use an 01 or 02 and get the pink intermotor injectors

 

I would have given you mine had they not fallen on the side of the road somewhere

 

I have so many other things I'm doing to this thing, 50 bucks per injector is outta reach for now. I guess I'll just run some Techron through and call it good for now.

 

If you're not noticing a misfire definitely do not mess with them. I bought 2 separate sets of knock off injectors (first set I knew were aftermarket. Second set was "labeled" Denso but they were imitations) and ended up having to put my original injectors back in. They had 219k on em and counting

 

It's a 2.4 which is reliable but not performance inclined.

Is it stock and not in need of more fuel?

Do you have injector leaks, either external or internal?

Do you have misses and codes?

No? Leave them alone. There is no 'upgrade' that will matter if they are functioning fine.

 

If your injectors are good don't mess with them unless you get quality replacements

These guys will clean and test them for you. About a 2 day turn around

 

You can clean your own injectors primitively for less than $10 and several hours of your time if cost is an issue.

 

But it doesn't make them shiny

 

Injectors on Toyotas are pretty much life time, you don't change them as a maitenance item, they are replaced as they fail.

As long as there's no codes, there's no reason to change them. Do a clean if you feel like it, change the orings and keep on truckin'

New injectors are basically a waste of money.
