Just helps get rid of the grind when downshifting.

When double clutching, the gears get sucked in, great feeling haha.

Haha I don't even bother trying to straight shift from 3-2 anymore. We normally have a lot of ground to cover, so we boogie.

HI range I'd never do anything but maybe the occasional Rev match. But for lo range it does make the difference when you do about 2k miles on gritty trails a year

Are talking about the front diff breather? Because on 3rd gens the rear breather goes only tot he top of the diff.

OP, the mod is cheap and easy. Pop off the old one, run some hose to your taillight assembly, a few bolts to take off the taillight and secure it. I used zipties to secure the hose.

    I hear you.

When driving normal in 2HI, the only time i would double clutch is when skipping gears. Saves the synchros a bit i think. I would often go 3-6, 2-4 and the most popular 4-6. I almost never use 5th, im guessing its for towing on flat roads.

The rear differential has no elevated breather, only a vent on top of the diff. The front diff does have an elevated breather. No rear diff protection and no preventing a vacuum condition when you drive into a creek or mud hole! The dirty water gets in via the hollow axles, not thought the vent on top of the diff.

The rear differential breather mod is about the easiest and cheapest mod you can do with the most benefit! See my mod photos: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/my-differential-breather-mod-photos.111954/

I'm the exact opposite. I never use 6th. Lifted, armor and oversized tires still net me 19.7mpg. When I start using 6th it drops to the 17mpg.

Makes sense. Im pretty much stock, except C load 265/70/17 bfgs and borla.

I get 19-20 mpgs using 6th going with the traffic, so im happy. A lot of times ill go in 6th cruising in city at 40-45, gets amazing mpgs that way.

Sliders and full skids coming in the future, and maybe Bilstein 5100 with a AAL.

I'm going to take mine to an off-road park to test out the 4WD system for the first time.

The Toyota instruction is very unclear about it for manual transmission.

    Do you know
    1. From 2WD to 4H, Can I just turn the knob and still be fully in gear without using the clutch?
    2. From 4H to 4L, stop the truck, clutch in, push and turn the knob to 4L, and wait for 4L indicator to stay on and not flashing, and then clutch out. That's what Toyota's instruction says, but it doesn't say which gear I should be in during clutch-in, can I be in neutral? 1st? 2nd?
    thanks in advance

    2-4hi, turn the knob whenever.

4hi - 4lo. Complete stop, clutch pushed all the way.
    That's it.

    This.

Edit: would like to add, make sure your wheels are not loosing traction when trying to shift from 2hi to 4hi.

thanks, for 4hi-4lo, I get the part of clutch in, is there anything I should be aware, do I need to shift the shifter to gear while I clutch in, or can I leave it in neutral, clutch in, engage 4lo, and clutch out, and then clutch in put in to 1st?

You know, I do it so much I have to think about it. 99% sure you just need to mat the clutch to the floor. I probably put it in neutral out of practice anyway

Wrong, it goes to the top of the diff, well below the top of the tires, also by nature of the design of the one way vent valve stock, you dont have to dunk the whole axle for it to suck water in due to vacuum.

You can test it out on the street in front of your house as long as it is straight. Don't turn in 4Hi / 4Lo. It's a great place to get comfortable before you need to use it.

Technically you just need to have the output of the transmission disconnected from the engine. Clutching in achieves this no matter the gear you're in. What I do is shift N-1-N with the clutch in after the 4LO request as that jostles the transfer case input and helps the dogs align for the shift. Just a manual transmission tip for not having to do multiple 4LO requests if your 4LO light continually blinks because the low range shift hub isn't aligned.
