I’d assume this would be covered under the Powertrain 5/60000

found it first from the driver side, but it’s easier From the passenger side. Back left of the engine maybe 8-10” down. I actually could see it when I was standing on a stool looking down into that section without the camera too.

Another reason I'm glad I took a gamble on my extended warranty, reached out to my service buddy and he said he's seen a few of these and the timing cover leak right at 40-60k mark.

Did they not learn from the same problem on the 2TR's back in 05.... they they later changed to a metal coolant bypass pipe?

I’m wondering the same thing!! I saw someone earlier said that you have to remove the injectors but if you could pull both intakes off and get to it.. it wouldn’t look horrible! Taking port injectors out wouldn’t bug me at all but direct injectors that be a brand new thing for me.

you definitely don’t need to pull injectors, I work at Toyota, first guy in our shop to see/do one. I didn’t even remove the intake manifold (should have) took me a few hours and scratched arms but it’s not that bad.

I’m a tech as well at a family business that my family owns and operates.. and I couldn’t see why you’d have to pull the injectors. I’ve never gotten into replacing high pressure ones on anything yet that’s why that would worry me a bit. But I went out and looked at my truck and it looks fairly easy to get the intakes off I had to. But maybe I’ll try your method if I gotta do mine myself! Overall this motor doesn’t look horrible to work on.

If I end up doing another I will remove intake manifold but leave all the injectors/etc in place. It’s a tight fit but def. possible with some patience

Good deal! That’s what I was thinking just wasn’t sure what was possible and not since I’ve never been around one. How are you guys diagnosing this issue? Scope/camera? I can somewhat see it on my back in the driveway but not very well.

I noticed the coolant expansion tank nearly empty during a multi point inspection (customer had no idea or any overheating issues) when I had the truck up on the lift I could see the dried up pink coolant had ran down the passenger side of transmission. Just followed the trail up to that bypass. Replaced it and haven’t seen it since. Of all the Tacoma’s that come thru the shop I’ve seen a total of 3 leak. Not very common in my personal experience

^^This right here^^ I had a 05 4runner and my wife’s gx470 with a strong coolant smell and very low on the reservoir. Could not find any leaks. Bought a new OEM cap and that did the trick and no more smell and coolant stays on level. I have no problems with my Taco.

Cool! Sounds easy enough to trace. I’m due for an oil change soon so when I throw it on the lift I’ll have to take a better look at things. Thanks man!

2018 SR5, 34000km (21000 miles). Was doing checks today and noticed both my coolant reservoir and rad were bone dry... wtf! Started looking around the engine down past the manifolds and can see some areas where there is caked on white/pink crystal residue (see example below). Looks like a coolant leak that is burning off.

Dealer will be looking at it Friday. I am guessing it is the passthrough pipe. Surprisingly no overheating or signs of stuff not working, must of been just enough left in the system that it was not showing as a problem yet. I have no idea how long I had been driving around like that. Topped the coolant off for now to hopefully last me the week.

I had this problem on my 2017 but Toyota isn't covering it under the powertrain warranty. What did everyone use to get this covered? They are saying coolant isn't part of the powertrain?
