Toyota Oil Filter (Made in Thailand) vs. the competition........

Aww come on! Do you really believe that? Calling it 'research' is coloring it as something groundbreaking...its just the same old drivel with new digital pictures. Provide something factual and relates in some way to filter performance in use. This is just the same old inflammatory crap, pandering to people's lack of technical savvy.

I guess it's OK to keep on beating a dead horse with countless threads bashing Fram with nothing more than the same old cut open cans and no hard facts?

All I'm asking for is something factual. Not impressions and judgments from someone with no qualifications to make those judgments.

I'm not going to debate this with you guys...I just want you to raise the level of your analysis, if you want to call it that. Or at least challenge me with something factual so I can go look for something that's a meaningful rebuttal.

I dunno...maybe you should rename this TACOMA & FRAM BASHERS WORLD.

 

That whole thing sounded like excuses for why you aren't talking about oil filters. There is plenty of evidence to support the some conclusions Chris drew. Will Fram filters blow your engine up as soon as you install them-No. Are their cheaper filters that work as well or better-Yes. That's all that was said.

 

Wow, I am really shocked at just how offended people are becoming over this thread. Chris took apart some filters and pointed out the obvious differences in the construction of them. I don't recall him ever attempting to portray this as a bulletproof scientific investigation. I think that he has revealed to many people who have never opened an oil filter what goes on inside. If you are looking for a lab quality review and you think that TW, or any non-scientific website can provide those answers then you are being foolish. Just take the info for what it is, an obvious observation, and move along. defending Fram or calling their detractors names is ridiculous, Fram is a mass produced 9not even produced by Fram, I might add), for the masses product that does a fair job at what it is designed for. I can't imagine anyone thinking that the holder of the largest market segment in anything is necessarily the best product. That would assume far too great a level of consumer education that exists in this world.

 

Not really, I'm just making it clear that this is just a totally redundant beat-the-dead-horse Fram basher's extravaganza thread. If it wasn't started off to be that way, then someone who's a moderator should understand how inflammatory his little display could be by how it panders to them.

If there is evidence that Fram is in some way inferior in meaningful ways, show it.

There may be cheaper filters, I suppose that' could be something to compare on. But I wouldn't know it: I get my

$9 XG3600 with SureGrip (Pack of 1)

XG3600's at Walmart, next aisle over from my oil. Convenient. Easy and cheap enough with $3/gal gas.

But better? Who the F knows...and why should I care if there are? There's ALWAYS something "better" in ways that don't matter. Assuming Fram's the market leader: they don't have to make crap up to try and steal away market share.

Chris's (and everyone else's) method is to take something apart and pick at how it's made, assuming that it relates in meaningful ways to how it performs. Maybe it does, but more likely it doesn't.

Case in point: I sold a VW to get into my Tacoma. Completely not meaning to compare a 4x4 pickup to a Golf, but this truck is a POS anyway. Incredibly unsophisticated in design, Toyota uses flimsy cheap materials in areas where VW used a lot of care with clever designs that function elegantly with superior materials. Does that mean VW's approach is better? No...Toyota made a lot of design compromises but in areas that really don't matter for long term performance.

How do I know this? I DON'T! I'm equally as ignorant of the technical side of their compromises as you are of Fram's! So maybe I'm wrong...as are we all.

At least I know it; if you all do you ignore it. Preferring to hack at filters, standing around clucking at what you don't like and congratulating yourselves on your supposed cleverness.

 

The 3614 part is easy- That's the filter Fram recommends for the Tacoma (1995-2009). You'd know this if you spent any time at all thinking about what you are saying instead of blindly fighting.
Honestly-At this point I'm still gunna use the parts I use...You are still gunna use the parts you use. Don't like what Chris said/looked at....Don't consider it.

Well said Brunes. If Buddywh1 wants to spend his money on a Fram so be it; others have decide otherwise. Buddywh1, Fram is the market leader in oil filters because they spend tons of money on marketing and advertising. Just because they are the market leader doesn't mean they're the best filter either. If you're comfortable and happy using a Fram, then be happy and stick with your Fram. Chris's presentation was fairly objective, he made no attempt to bash Fram, and left it to the viewer to decide. No need to bash on those who choose not to use Fram for their own reasons....You come of like a complete hypocrit.

 

EDITED: removed the 'AND TOYOTA', cause I can't say with any certainty Toyota 'approved' Fram's filter! It is, however, customary to let the OEM know when they are putting up a given product as standard replacement with a request for comment. Toyota is of course not obligated to comment and if they did it would be limited in scope.

And yes, many OEM's DO approve other filter manufacturer's substitutes. It's not at all far-fetched.

That's my last on this.

man, theres plenty of good oil filters out there. i've been using fram for a few years now. didn't bother me much but i used fram TG. 6 bucks for that, i think i'm gonna switch to oem oil filter and i saved 2 dollar extra. lol

 

This to me seems to be a very constructive thread, I don't know why people are getting made because a comparison was made of the guts of some oil filters and the one they used looked cheaper in the review... People are allowed to be critics, so i really don't know why anyone is complaining. After seeing this review i will probably go to the Toyota dealership on my next oil change.

I don't think FRAM is a bad oil filter and i don't think they are "not in the government regulations" [as someone put it]. But i do think they are using their name to sell cheaper oil filters at a higher rate. FRAM is about the only thing i see in autozone and pepboys around here, seems to me they are capitalizing on the name, but thats just my opinion. feel free to flame away!!

 

Folks,

What Chris has failed (or is too humble) to emphasize is that;

1) Size Matters,
2) Once you go black, you dont go back.
3) Its pre lubed, hence no foreplay required.

That kind of explains why some people may be threatened by the Toyota filter.

Ok, thanks. I figured I would ask. Your probably right, I think I have always used that just cause my dad has done the same. Back in the day it was probably more than buying a name, who knows. I don't use synthetic, not sure I was ever completely sold on it. I figure its not worth the extra money cause I'm not going over my miles and change it when its due. IMHO. Thanks for the answer though.

The first problem here - YOU deleting posts because YOU think their non constructive. You didn't originally allow a debate to occur in the first place and abusing your mod powers. There wasn't a damn thing wrong with what I originally posted. If you hadn't deleted my posts, I wouldn't have gotten involved any further with your little parade in the first place.

And the fact that two people come here to doubt your opinion- and we're the ones getting bashed because we don't believe your little videos & internet searching skills. Because personally, I expect more - legitimate FACTS, from a legitimate & respectable sources before I believe anything I read on the internet.

 

The orange is worth 7hp on the 2.7 engine, 10 when used in conjunction with a stick on hood scoop.
