I bought my first Tacoma with 150,000 miles on the odometer. Finally sold it for more than I imagined possible with over 265,000 on it.
Bought my current 2007 with 138,000 miles and it runs like a top. People are shocked when I tell them it is a 2007 model because it is in such great shape.
When looking for a tacoma I was looking for something with less than 150,000 that had been taken care of. I know this thing will easily get over 300,000 without a problem if I take care of it.

As a couple of people mentioned, watch out for trucks that come from road salt states. I'm on my second 2nd gen, and after about five winters on each truck is when I've had to start replacing things that are rusted or corroded.

You gotta undercoat any vehicle in the NE (or anywhere with road salt for that matter) unfortunately

I would rather take a high mileage engine that was taken care of. Than a low mileage engine that was abused.

Good advice there. When I was looking for mine online I had to carfax every one I was seriously interested in to find out what state it had come from. Found several for sale in Ga. and the south states that had been purchased at auction by car lots or dealers that actually had came from the rust belt.
Found one in Atlanta I fell in love with and had planned on taking the trip to go purchase. Asked the seller to take pics of the undercarriage before I left and send them to me on my phone. Top of truck and interior were immaculate. Frame and undercarriage were rusted to hell underneath. Even shocked the salesman. Did a carfax on it and found it had been purchased at auction and spent most of its life in the rust belt. Ran away from that one as quick as I could. After that I started carfaxing everything before I would buy.

I drove mine from GA to the Grand Canyon then up into Utah for Zion and Bryce then back home through Colorado a few years ago. It had 170,000 miles on it when I left. I did lose a day and almost $300 getting a U-Joint replaced in Flagstaff though. I'm at 207,000 right now. But the Grand Canyon trip was my last long road trip with it. I needed a bigger truck, but kept the Tacoma. We use it locally now and often for trips of 200-300 miles round trip. I'd not have any issues with a 4 hour drive each way.

Bought my 2010 TRD sport in June, 199k......interior was ok, typical rust underneath.......
Did a couple of services myself (power steering, radiator, spark plugs, filters, drive belt, battery,) and then ran it thru 2 dealerships multi point inspections when I did more serious services, (transm, and rear differential).
If you look at old fluids when you change them or the condition of filters and plugs, you can tell a lot about previous owner maintenance habit........especially cabin filter.......dealer are stupid, they won’t change them prior, so just reach in glove box and remove it.....will tell you a lot.

after all that..........20 hrs there and 20 hrs back.....tX to South Dakota.........didn’t burn any oil and ran book fuel mPG.

When I got back, changed rear shocks myself, Bilstein 5100s, and paid a mechanic to install Bilstein 5100 struts and leveled.......what a difference.

Got a year left on the Toyota frame rust letter........wish me luck

Two years ago, I bought my 2010 A/C LB with 125K miles. I was the second owner and spoke with the first owner although I had purchased the truck from a second-hand dealer. Now the truck has 142K. Was my daily driver, but now it's the weekend warrior as I have a 4-mile commute. I replaced all the fluids and plugs right after I bought it. This summer I redid the brakes, charged the AC and changed the serpentine belt last week. That's it. It goes anywhere without complaint, and I've had 2 people ask to buy it in the last month. I'm thinking of selling it to buy a dual cab to haul the family of 4, and looking to buy the same rig. Why? Because with proper maintenance, the truck is indestructible.

I just drove my 2008 with 151K miles on it for 1800 miles with 900 extra pounds of stuff in it. Just yesterday, I pulled a Uhaul 6x12 trailer with 3500 pounds of stuff in it for 200 somewhat hilly miles. That said, I'm the original owner, and I personally wouldn't buy a used vehicle with over say 75K miles on it without a STEEP discount.

The 4Runner and the Chevy have pulled the boat to the Gulf once or twice each. That's all the salt they've seen, and I washed the crap out of them, including the underside, when I got back. Because of the amount of cleanup when I get back I don't saltwater fish anymore. that, and the flesh-eating bacteria. I flew into OHare on a Jan 3rd and there was an inch+ of black ice on the roads. Never again. I COMPLETELY understand the use of salt.
