Tire install cost

I need new tires. The cost of the rubber is easily compared between shops, but I'm at a loss as to other costs.

I was just quoted by Sears;

• Free Mounting
• Tire Disposal $2 each
• Tire Balance $13.25 each
• Rebuild TPMS valves $6.99 each
• Install TPMS maintenance kit $5.00 each
• Alignment $69.99

There are a couple items that I wonder if I even need. Do valves need to be rebuilt every time tires are changed? That's almost $50 for parts and labor. I feel like the $53 to balance the tires is a little excessive too and the alignment is just not needed.

Or am I completely wrong and should be paying $180 beyond the cost of tires?

The tires are 265/75/16 General Grabber AT2 priced at $149 each.

why would they rebuild the tpms valves?

i just got tires installed and he said he didnt replace the valves since we have tpms

 

I just got new tires a few hours ago from Americas Tire Co, and they didn't charge me for alignment or TPMS.

My receipt shows:
Qty: 4 Environmental Fee $1.75
Qty: 4 Lifetime Spin Balancing $16.00
Qty: 4 Lifetime Repairs Included $.00

 

All of this is up to you if you want to have it done, except for the tire disposal and balancing. Both the $2 disposal and the $13 balancing fees are very average.

As far as having your TPMS valves rebuilt, that's usually a maintenance item that should be done every once in awhile, as they use a rubber o-ring as a sealer and can wear out like any other gasket. The rebuild kit usually includes a new aluminum sleeve too. You can probably get away with using your existing valves as-is, or you can have them rebuilt for peace of mind against future leaks. Totally up to you.

As far as alignment goes, same thing. How do the tires coming off the truck look? Are the evenly worn? If they are, you're probably fine. If they aren't, you obviously will want an alignment done so that you don't prematurely ruin your new tires.

 

They wouldn't have charged you for an alignment because Americas Tire doesn't perform alignments. Being that you have a 2011, you shouldn't need an alignment or TPMS rebuild. The OP has a 2006 though, so he may need both.
