I have a hard time wanting to leave this area to deer hunt. The few places I would like to go to are either really hard to get a permit or too expensive for me. The only other state I’ve hunted has been northern Minnesota on 3 occasions , only to freeze my ass off and see a handful of deer. If you wanted to come here I could hook you up. What caliber of deer do you have in East Texas as far as body size and rack size.

I'm with you on that. It's really hard to walk away from what is familiar, even if just for a little while.

Rack size is good for a couple reasons. There’s a 10k acre hunting outfitter I share I couple fence lines with so his big boys hunker down on my land cause it’s just me and my best friend hunting on my property. Body size doesn’t compare to IL I’d bet cause I’ve seen some deer out yalls way that are big

here’s the hard spot for me. I own 200 acres in East Texas. Land I grew up on. But since I live in NC now I have to pay for fucking out of state tags on my own land I grew up on back home. Texas is bullshit for that reason but I still pay for them every other year. Between that, I only shoot pigs. Good eating in the winter and just fun target practice in the summer months

Yea same. But I’ve pushed myself out of my comfort zone the last two years. Rifle hunter Elk in Colorado last year (never done anything like that before) and this year I’ll bow hunt for the first time, first time in Montana hunting, and first time backpacking and hunting at the same time. It’s going to be a beautiful dumpster fire

I hope you have a great archery season! After my first year of bowhunting (almost 30 years ago), I was so hooked that I put the guns down; I've only gun hunted one time since.
Best of luck to you and be sure to keep us updated!

I’m already hooked. I’ve hunted my entire life but have always convinced myself that bow hunting is above my skill set. Last season I killed a buck at 12 yards (with a 308 o_O) so that changed my perspective and I’m going to give this a shot.

Believe me, good or bad, y’all will be the first place I update at the end of the trip. I’ve got no shame, but I’m hopeful for sure

We'll be waiting!! And also if an animal is good enough to dump the string on, it's good enough to post a picture (with smiles). ANY animal with a bow is a trophy. Us TacomaWorld bowbenders will be happy for ya!

Yea thats where two of my cohorts and I disagree. They are holding out for a bull, but I am just concerned with putting meat in the freezer.. Ill smoke a cow on day one if i get the chance and be as tickled as a 6x6 bull.

Mule deer i may hold out for a big boy, but that may change the second i see something legal

Have they been successful on previous elkhunts? If so, I can understand. The guys that have been helping me with my elk hunt (canceled because of fires) urged me to shoot the first legal elk. Get used to breaking down an elk, gutless method, packing it out.... Not sure if I would have shot one the first couple of days or the first week. Sh!t, who am I kidding, first morning cow elk presents a shot, arrow would be on the way!! I like shooting critters with my bow. Eating them, too!!

Last year was all of our first year hunting elk. Got 2nd rifle tags in colorado. Out of the 6 of us hunting, one got a 6x6 bull. Three of us were hunting nearby (I was actually the one that flushed the bull out to him cause i had been following that bull for about a mile lol) and we de-boned and hiked it out (the three of us) in one trip. That was a brutal hike out but we did it. I think he killed the bull around 2pm and we were back at camp around 10pm

    This ×10. ^^
I love when the arrows start flying and this thread gets active again.
I recently noticed that the leaves are beginning to change, oaks have acorns on them (my favorite food source to hunt) and the nights are slightly starting to cool. I've gone 9 months without taking a vacation day....all for this.
Not sure about everyone else, but I love the photos. Doesn't matter if there's an animal in them, a pic of your walk to a hunting spot, a practice arrow in a target...whatever; please keep them coming.
Hope you all have your best archery season ever and remember to stay safe.
