So I found a bunch of threads and websites even with 6x9 front and 6.5 rear speaker adaptors...and some for the front tweeters too. But the fronts are already 6x9 right?

Anyhoo point being I'm going to be upgrading my speakers soon (non jbl) and in my last vehicle I found brackets that allowed for going from 6.5 in the rear to 6x9, I can't find such brackets for the Tacoma though.

    1. would 6x9's fit in the rear?
    2. if yes does anyone know of such brackets?

I dont think its possible, nor is it really needed.

The rear door panels are designed for the 6.5 and would probably hit a 6x9.

The adapters that you see online are because there is just a hole in the doors, they are not shaped like speakers. So you need a plastic adapter to allow for a speaker to fit.

pretty much what he said. More often you see people putting 6.5's in the front with adapters (that is what I have). The 6x9 component kits are generally vehicle specific kit or you get a regular 6x9.

6x9's perform better according to my google searching, but 6.5's will do, I was just curious. I was mistaken, on my other car the fronts were 6.5 and I upgraded them to 6x9 and the rears where 5 and upgraded to 6.5...something like that, it was a wrx wagon (well actually saab 92x, same thing). The sound improvement was amazing...but could be argued that was just because I went from stock paper cone to kickers. But still all the searching I've done says 6x9's out perform 6.5's...but again, since I plan to upgrade the head unit and get better quality door speakers (better than the kickers in my car) driven by a decent 4 channel amp I shouldn't be disappointed :D Now I'm curious if my tweeters in the saab/subi are the famed ones many upgrade to...that car isn't running and when it does will only be a backup if the taco breaks down...so in other words it won't be driven XD I might just buy the adapters and swap the speakers (6x9 and 6.5) from the subi upgrade into the tacoma, only ran them for a few months. Will be awhile before I save up for the amp and head unit, largest cost of the upgrade is those two, then save up for better speakers. Oooo I like that plan :)

I assumed the reason for the adapters is that the stock speakers have the "adapter" fully integrated onto them, otherwise why does everyone buy them when installing aftermarket speakers.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated!

At least in my experience just makes install easier or allows adapting other speakers. If you buy from crutchfield they give all the adapters you need for free. Also there are a bunch of OEM replacement setups now that are basically plug and play. 6x9 have more surface areas so you should get more bass out of them if thats what you are going for. if you go with other setups like 6.5's then add subs its not as big of a deal. All of my previous not taco setups were 6.5/5.25 component setups paired with subs.

Components were a must and there are not many component offerings. Most are going to be 6.5, 5.25, etc. So you will limit the options. The OEM replacement setups are now more available but I notice they tend to charge for it. Focal has a replacement 6x9 setup thats like $300 but you can get almost the same speaker setup but 6.5 non OEM replacement for half that then crutchfield includes all of the requirement connections/brackets. I made my own adapter for the tweeter but def nice when it all just bolts up.

If your Subie has kicker speakers then likely the same one.

Also if you add some sound deadening it will liven up the speakers too. A lot tend to be more mid bass and adding the sound deadening to the doors helped big time outside of replacing the HU. Next up for me on that is adding an amp for more power. Not sure I have room for a sub with how its setup but I do miss some good bass.

Yeah I'm currently looking into removing the plastic behind the back seats to make room for a decent box and still be able to hid it by flipping the seats up...plus darkest legal tint. The stock head unit volume goes to 60 but after 43 the bass is distorted and after 47 the mids and highs do to. I listen to everything from bach cello suites to 80's style synth to five finger death punch XD But I like it loud and I hate when one of my favs comes on and I'm already at max and can't go any higher.
"This amp goes to eleven." love that!

I'll see if my existing adapters will work otherwise TO CRUTCHFIELD!!!

Honestly with the kicker speakers I already have and a headunit upgrade I'll probably be happy...but...I know me...I won't stop there till I have a sub in the back. There's some good boxes out there that fit behind the driver in that cubby behind the seats but they are all 10's and they don't have a box for the other side :( Plus my brother in law gave me two competition 12's and I have two 7000 watt amps I got dirt cheap off a friend to drive them, probably only need one but they can take it XD I joked with my brother in law that I'd have to keep the gain almost all the way down for my purposes. He's BIG into competition car audio. I just wanna ROCK my socks

nice! Curious to see how it plans out. I have been planning to use a shallow mount sub since there really is not a ton of room back there. If you run into issues look into those. Kenwood, Pioneer, Focal, JL Audio and a few others make some decent setups that can mount in pretty shallow small enclosures

lol I honestly don't know if 12's can fit back there, even that one 10 custom enclosure had pics of people's taco's with the plastic removed :\ I'll have to see. I often lower the seats and take the puppers for a ride if it weren't for that it'd be easy. I was already thinking of removing the rear seats and making some sort of custom setup for tools and the pups...but if I put in subs I'll want to be able to hide them somehow. Guess I could take out the seats, remove the plastic, build a custom discreet box that doesn't look like a speaker box, then put a flat surface for the puppers in front of it. If I do something I'll make a build thread, until you see that, don't get your hopes up on my lazy ass XD

ha I hear you there. I have been talking about putting some in mind since 2013. Still has not happened. Part of me is bitter since my last setup was jacked from a car back in the day. Now if I could fit 2 JL W6 15's in my Taco that would be insanity. I saw 2 18's in a S10 once back in the day. I do not need that kind of power nowadays but man do I miss it.

awesome. Just ordered an alarm with all the goodies (glass break, keyfob notification, remote start, etc), figured that would be a good upgrade to get first ;)
