I just got a 2020. I plan to fluid film. When is the best time to start? I have heard arguments for right away. I have heard arguments saying wait a bit.

I'd just make sure it is on before the salt goes down. It washes off, but not easily unless you have a pressure washer. If you do it now, I'd recommend just touching it up before winter to be safe. We all know how rainy it gets before the snow and salt starts.

I was looking at Krown but I heard your vehicle will drip oil for a couple weeks and stain your driveway etc.

Imo, do it while the season is still warm...before winter if in the rust belt. I did mine in late sept. when i had the tundra. FF like any rust inhibitor works best on a clean chassis every year. It will wash off after awhile driving on wet roads. Was assured cosmoline rp-32 won't do that...at least no where as quick.

I've seen a vehicle down once with cosmoline that had a few year on it since it'd was treated with it. That was enough to sell me on the product. FF has to applied every season or more for the same results. The cosmoline costs more per can, but i'll thank you in your labor, and hopefully come out ahead in the long run. Should run you somewhere close to a hound for 6 cans including shipping and tax.

I've actually heard mixed recommendations on the clean frame part. Some will apply and then drive down a dirt road. Others will spray it on no matter what the frame looks like, claiming it sticks better and protects better when it soaks into stuck on dirt, for an added later of protection. Haven't heard any downright wrong ways to do it other than making sure not to spray the exhaust, but that goes for any of them.

Possible, i use to do my tundra every fall with ff. I began treating it just past the 2nd year. After doing it every year it did look better after 19 years than some tacoma pics here that had 3-4 year old trucks with rust.
On another note imo, cosmoline is best applied to a new clean chassis, and allowed to dry for at least an hour before using the vehicle. I'll say my new truck looks great under there where its been applied. Been through some rainy days on the roads where ff would of starting washing off, and would of had to be reapplied, this cosmoline looks just the same as it was sprayed on the day i did it.

How about galvanized and fully boxed? Pretty sure that would come in quite a bit cheaper and be 10x better than what they've been doing for the last 20 years.

I've seen that used on body panels, but not on frames.

I bought a gallon of WoolWax and some cheap paintbrushes. I don't have a sprayer and figured I'd crawl under the truck and apply the stuff the best I can. Better than nothing I guess but it sucks that we have to be thinking about rust on a brand new vehicle. Never occurred to me to do this to my '91 and I had it 14 years.

Well i had a 93 toyota 4x4 pickup that i did with ff every year. 7 years, and 81k miles later i traded up for the tundra. Dealer was impressed, that frame was still painted black.

Brought in my 2017 Sport for frame recall and oil change, all they did on the frame was supposedly put plugs in some holes in the frame,, was out of there in an hour :fingerscrossed:

You can buy Land Rover frame that are fully galvanized. If you are dipping the frame in paint, you can dip and rotate them in galvanizing. The big issue is the disposal.

However, you'll double or triple the life of the frame easily.

Do they even treat the roads up there with salt/brine? If not, you're not going to have the rust issues we have in the Midwest.

I looked it up and CA uses a tiny amount of salt compared to all other states. For example, Michigan uses 12.9 tons of road salt per season compared to 3 tons in CA. I only bring it up because when you see horror photos of 2nd/3rd gen rust damage, I believe all of those trucks are in the midwest/mid atlantic area of the country. Doing a little preventative corrosion treatment isn't necessarily bad, but I wouldn't expect your truck to experience a catastrophic level of rust damage in that part of the country.

What's there to figure out? Steel rusts if an oxidizer is present. There's a reason you see 40 year old Toyota trucks overseas in the desert but not in the northeast. I don't know what people expect, road salt destroys vehicles.

Especially when they’ve done little to no preventative maintenance. I’ve made it a habit lately of looking under friend’s cars here in Michigan. All makes and models...most of them have serious rust issues, but most don’t care as they are selling them at around the 8 year mark. I have no doubt a Tacoma frame can last that long with zero prevention, but will last as long as the rest of the truck if you keep up on the yearly rust preventative.
