Can you use the same type of oil for Front / Rear Diff's & Transfer Case

No way really? Lol

 

Very common for it to get -60 and lower w/ wind chill out in eastern Montana in the dead of winter. Also our friends north of the border deal with even colder temps.

Just did this today. Rear diff. and transfer case. Mobil 1 and new crush washers. Drain and fill plugs came out real easy.
Did front diff a few months ago when I put on JBA UCAs.

 

1. Several places in the US hit -40 ambient temp. Not the "with wind chill" shit to make it sound colder than it is. and yes, -40 with wind chill is cold as fuck.
2. We are used to the skewed C vs F scales. That is lessened below freezing.

 

It's worth mentioning that refers to 75W-140, hardly the best choice for extreme cold weather. Many of us run

JUST KIDDING, pretty cool its actually the only time Celsius and F are the same.

For everyone else ...I work in northern Alaska and our mechanic doesn't use any special oil in our gas burners and we were in at least -40 for over two months.. one day it got down to -98F. Thankfully no work outside that day!

 

I was going to point that out as well..

 

In Wyoming the lowest recorded temp - not windchill - was -56 at the Boulder radar station. When I lived at Lander, Wy a rather deep valley - it would get a puddle of cold air and hang down there for days.

I have been reading ravenol is a direct replacement for the expensive toyota transfer case LF fluid (albiet without as much additives) and is only 18 bucks a quart.

I'm running royal purple in front and rear; no issues.

 

The previous owner used the Valvoline 75w90 in the diffs when he did a fluid change about 40,000 miles ago. I'm going try the Valvoline synthetic 75w90 with the K&W Limited Slip Gear Oil Additive friction modifier additive. From what I have read it is ok to use it in diffs and transfer case. Going to put same stuff in everything. I got 6 quarts of it at Advance Auto Parts for $62 using a 25% off coupon on their website. $7.50 for a tube of the K&W using same coupon. If there are any issues I'll report back.

 

Think I also used Valvoline. The only place you need the LSD additive is in the rear (if you actually have an LSD diff)

Just to clarify, and as noted by the posts above...... the additive goes in the rear LSD diff only. Not in the t-case or the front diff.

Further, synthetics are generally not recommended in mechanical LSD differentials. They can be too slippery for the LSD to work properly.

 

When I was researching this I called Mobil1 tech support and Redline Tech support. They both indicated that their gear oil with the LS additive would be fine for both diffs and the transfer case even though they weren't limited slip. Do we have some real-world experience here somewhere that this is inaccurate?

 

We are discussing a couple different things here, so let's look at them separately. First, there's no problem using synthetics with LS additives in the t-case and in the front diff. What I meant earlier was not to add K&W Limited Slip Gear Oil Additive friction modifier to those particular gearboxes. It probably wouldn't hurt anything other that your wallet, but neither will it serve any purpose.

Secondly, assuming you do have a mechanical limited-slip rear differential, your K&W additive is perfect to use there. The question now is which oil. Many members have had problems (chattering, for instance) after using synthetic oil in rear LSD applications. Dino oil works much better, and to repeat, be sure to add your K&W friction modifier.

This is based on reading many posts here and over at TN, where you are also a member and are asking the same questions. Some owners may have had different experiences, but that's my best take on what I have read. Disclaimer: my Tacoma OR has an elec. locking rear diff so no need for friction modifiers. As I posted earlier, I run Mobil-1

75W-90 synthetic in all three boxes.

 

Pages 528 and 529 from the owner’s manual say to use 75w-85 GL-5 in the differentials and 75w-90 GL-5 in the transfer case.

Mobil 1 says the product OP mentions is GL-5 spec. Viscosity is different for the differentials compared to the transfer case.
