Early Morning 3rd Gear Grind

My first shift into 3rd every morning will grind. Just a little, nothing major... I've found that if I take it real slow, press the clutch in and slowly and easily slip it into 3rd it wont grind.

Just wondering what your thoughts are?


I've been thinking about changing the tranny fluid to synthetics, sounds like a good start.

I'm not really worried about it, just curious.

 

Switch it to Amsoil tranny lube and be done with it

 

I have a week off at the end of the month.

I'll let you know how it works out.

I'm switching the plugs over at that time as well. Getting a full tune-up! The truck is getting ready to sit, as I now have an Altima for everyday driving. About time to give the Tacoma a break, 2005 with 84K!

Anybody have the right type of fluid needed and how much for the 6spd?

 

yes switch to synthetic tranny lube. royal purple is my vote but all the above are great as well. it is the synchro in the tranny that is not lining up smoothly.

 

Same here, every morning or whenever the truck is cold 3rd gear will grind. As you say, if I'm paying attention I can avoid it.

 

Mine did that with 3rd then 4th them my trany blew! hope it is not the same problem! i was at 140,000 HARD miles!

 

I put synthetic oil in my old truck and it was amazing difference i will be putting synthetic in my 2008 this weekend if time allows!

 

I had pretty much the same problem.. All other gears were smooth as butter.. 3rd was a pain.. Would go in fine then next time it would do the bump n grind.. After reading about the fluids folks here used I changed out the tranny fluid with Red Line MT90.. I was a little skeptical at first.
Took it for a spin after the fluid change and was very pleased with the results. 3rd gear is now flawless.. Hope it works out for ya..

 

Doesn't have squat to do with tranny lube.. Has to do with RPM vs gear. The RPM is off for engaging that gear. Whether there are other factors I don't know. Personally I don't like syncromesh and wish it didn't exist. Your tranny might be screwed up but basicly you need to be at the correct RPM for that gear to engage properly.

 

it does make sense good lube makes everything slide in easier..
