My 2006 Tacoma is on it's last leg, what is the best way to sell it?

Welp, my 2006 Tacoma needs its engines lower end rebuilt and won't pass smog. (Bad piston rings) It's burning a quart of oil every 40 miles. I'm in California, so selling a car without a smog certificate is tricky to say the least. I don't have the space at my residence to part it out. Besides selling to Coparts or a junk yard, do I have any options? The truck has clean title and registration, runs, but smokes like heck*. Any advice on how to sell her is much appreciated. Thank in advance.

Trade it in. Drive it to the dealership the night before and don’t let them start it till you sign the paperwork for a 2021 Pro :D

Have you considered a junk yard engine? It would likely be easier than all of that.

Put another scrap yard engine it the truck and truck on. Doesn't matter if you decide to trade or keep it this is the best option IMO. I don't know about California law, but here in GA I'd not have any issues selling it as is. I wouldn't lie to a potential buyer, and I'd price it accordingly. But I still think I'd come out ahead financially to replace the engine 1st.

^^^^ if you r buying something new , or fairly new , dealer may only give it a quik walkaround , note the year and mileage , and RUSH to their desk to get your signature on a sale . ( salesman has his quota to make !!! )
if this fails , all ya gotta do is leave....

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Drop another motor in and drive that Bitch. Edit: I mean if that’s the only real problem and you like the truck, correct? Call Co Part for a motor. You can do this... I want you to do this. The truck needs you to do this

Trade-in or an honest out-of-state sale via the internet would work. Swapping in a salvaged engine would work as well, but not everyone can do this themselves or knows a decent shop to do it for them for a fair price.

If the truck is in otherwise good shape and it's worth it to you. Then a new engine would be much cheaper than a vehicle payment for 5 or 6 years. Even a used vehicle will cost you a lot more than a replacement engine.

    • . I’d consider doing an engine swap but I don’t have a space or resources to do so. I’d probably have to hire out a mechanic. It looks like used engines are $2,000 to $3,000 dollars. The truck is a base model regular cab. My registration and smog certificate are due in a month, right now selling to coparts might be an option I might have to look at hard

I bought a $400 engine with a 30 day warranty and $400 to install. Talk to your local Fire Chief and ask who he would recommend to do the job

Understandable not everyone has the resources, but I’d at least list it on the interwebs and see if someone else will take it off your hands for parts or engine swap. Might be able to get more from a private sale than CoParts (not sure what that is but assuming it’s a scrap yard?).

Also might be worth posting in the single cab thread someone might be interested.

    Honestly curious, why the FC?
