What are you paying for 2020 Tacomas?

I saw someone posted that he paid MSRP... wow that sucks! I would never give the dealership any satisfaction on the deal. Their motto is to take as much as they can legally!

 

Didn't want to muddy up the forum with a new thread, so hopefully someone can let me know if its acceptable to post a "price check" style thread. Fairly limited inventory in my area, which has got be looking a few years back...
2017 OR 6' 4D 36.5k for $30,599 has got me tempted when a local 2020 has a MSRP for $40k+.

 

That's actually a pretty good price, that would be a normal price prior to the COVID used / new madness. I'd offer them $30k and run, you could turn around and sell that to Carvana for $34k right now. Assuming 4wd?

 

4x4 yeah, may try to send a buddy who is local to them, and a Tacoma owner, down to scout it out for me.

Is this the best thread to learn what's a fair price? Every forums different so I don't want to annoy anyone, but obviously want to get the best price. Especially since I also recently added a mortgage payment, hahah.

 

Probably, there's not really a used thread, but I've had 12 Tacomas, 7 of them 3rd gens, so I kind of know my way around them and current market. Tacoma's retain about 70% residual value after 3 years, so depending on the options, that truck is priced right there. The used and new market is stupid right now, you have new trucks going for MSRP or higher, used ones going for what you could have bought them new. That price is fairly reasonable and I bet if you don't snag it someone else will shortly.

 

A co-worker had warned me things were a little crazy right now. I've done decent in the past in my battle with dealers, but it does seem like Tacoma's off a higher level of challenge. Luckily I'm not in a real rush, just don't want to be driving my GTI to the cabin come winter...

To be clear, are saying right now used models are going for what you could have bought them for new at the time (zero depreciation) or that they basically cost the same as a current model (inflation due to demand). Just wondering how crazy things are, hahah.

 

So usually you can get 10% off MSRP with some negotiation, even higher if you are good at it. So for instance my fully loaded 17 DCSB OR had a $41k MSRP, I negotiated it to $36.5k, if you jump on cars.com, carvana, etc. right now you'll find 2017's going for that same amount right now. New is the same but good luck getting anywhere near 10% or more off MSRP on an OR right now, many are paying MSRP even on SRs. That's pretty much the situation. And with a bubble in the supply chain and strong demand, its gonna be awhile before things stabilize. Like I said that deal you posted is pretty solid, that would have been a fair price before all this.

 

Great, well hopefully I can get my financing lined up in case I want to move on the local 2017.
It's funny, initially I thought "let's get a beater truck" then "Tacoma would be nice" to "wow, used ones hold crazy value! Maybe go new for better rate from the dealer?" and now I'm back to looking a used.
Gotta love car buying.

 

A lot of us think 17 is one of the better years too .

 

Any particular reasons? Just wanting to educated.

 

16 was first year for third gen and 18 and up has safety features some dont care for . Its probably everyone just loves the year they own .


I wish I had auto high beams and adaptive cruise but I hear complaints on here about them so IDK .

 

Just thought I would throw this out there -- looks to be good deals on Tundras at the moment. In our area, Toyota is offering $2,500 cash back (and crazy 72 month financing). Nothing being offered on Tacomas, at least here in NY.

Now, I totally get these are two different trucks ... yada yada yada ... but for those on the line who need a good, solid truck and want to stay in the Toyota family it is an option at least work considering ... Not for everyone but for some of the folks here -- especially those who need a good, reliable work truck.

 

Thats a nice pre COVID deal! I'm looking for the same set up pretty much (2021 fully loaded Cement, TRD OR, DC the only difference would be a long bed and if possible a 2WD). I'm in Cali and I know how tough it can be to score a decent deal on these trucks. I'm not in a hurry to get the truck and I am willing to travel if it makes financial sense.

I know you've had many Tacos in a short span of time and you know a lot about them. Would you happen to know if the above config comes in a 2WD? I saw someone post the new 21's prices in which it listed the TRD OR, DCLB in a 2WD, I just have never been able to build that config on Toyotas site.

Also I'm curious if you don't mind me asking. On your trade, being it that it was a previous year model, did you have it payed off already or did you still owe on it?

 

They do make that config, however, whether your region allocates that specific build you'll have to discuss with them, if not they'll have to do a special allocation request where the factor approves the changes in an existing / scheduled build / allocation. 13% off MSRP in cali is gonna be tough, let alone most regions and w/out rebate. Still owed (but less than what they gave me), I aint richy rich over here and rates have been so low makes more sense to keep the money invested, but thats another topic of discussion.

13% in cali does sound like a pipe dream right? But like I said I'm willing to travel out of state if it makes financial sense and I'm not in a hurry as I have a beater 2003 Altima that I bought new and 2013 Honda Shadow for the two wheels. I've been saving for some time now and I have the $ to buy out right but as you mentioned, I aint no richy rich and can find better places to invest. I was thinking maybe Arizona once production starts back up and normalized for the 21's.

 

I have bought a few in AZ from multiple dealers, let me know and I can give you my contacts, all of which were in the 11-13% off MSRP range.

So Toyota is a weird animal, you can't just build a truck to your liking like the other brands, each region has allocations from Toyota, each region also is limited to what config/options they typically sell or want to sell in that region, this is the reason you'll see on the build website if you change the zip code the options, colors, etc. change. So say that configuration you are looking for is not a normal allocation for your region, the dealer will have to put in a special request at the factory to have the options changed to match on a planned similar allocation which the factory will have to approve. When people say they "ordered" a new Tacoma, the dealer simply looked in their allocations and found one similar or reallocated one to their dealer or put in a special allocation request as mentioned.

 

Just purchased my 2020 DCLB SR5 from a local dealer In Laconia NH (56 miles away). I spoke with the internet sales manager the day before my appointment and was able to knock off $200 MSRP but that's it. Buying experience was very hostile and not the least bit friendly. Everyone I dealt with acted like I was bothering them. Not at all a pleasant experience. They were very firm on price as local inventory is almost non existent, especially for a long bed. I couldn't find a MGM DCLB within 200 miles of me.

You should reach out to Toyota customer care, I did this once with a bad customer service experience, they take it very serious, ended up getting a $100 voucher towards accessories/parts.

 

I may actually consider this. I am still very bothered with how I was treated at this dealership, especially for the money that I spent. They even snuck in the prepaid maintenance plan for $750 which I made clear I did not want and still tacked it onto the loan. What a headache. I gave them grief about this and they said they would refund the amount to my loan. But still; now my payment is higher than it should be and just completely unnecessary. The whole process was just so rushed through and the employees just wanted to get me in and out.
