Why buy TRD if I am going to replace the gears and suspension?

For the same body size, with the same power, with less issues? No.

Let's not make this a typical pissing match between the ranger, colorado and frontier.

Not the first time I've gotten that :). It started when I used to play an MMMORPG called Everquest. I played a necromancer, so punting puppies was the most evil thing I could think of, so that was my surname in game. Anyway, fast forward 20 years, and I now own 8 pomeranians, so I can't walk without punting one. I love dogs, it's people that I'm on the fence about...

Resale is another reason. A higher optioned truck will always fetch more on the market. How much more may be negligible, may not be. Depends on the buyer. It'll also sell quicker.

I know on the surface this is true, but does it hold up with a truck that has been modified in the manner the OP intends to? (Honest question, I really don't know)

Not if he's going to build it into a modified offroad truck. Resale can take a pretty big hit.

I'd buy something used that's already had depreciation kick in.

There is an e-locker on the gears I am considering, but I am honestly out of my depth trying to comparing the e-locker to the Automatic Limited Slip Differential. I know there was a great post on this forum about how robust stock ALSD is on 3rd Gen Tacomas. I am skeptical that anything software based will be in the same league as a mechanical locker.

If you're doing all this - go with what @whatstcp said and get either a 2016 or 2017 SR5.

The 2018 and on has all the annoying safety bullshit. Any trims above SR5 have the weird keyfob that can be hacked instead of a physical key, and features you really don't need with your listed mods.

The SR5 has keyless entry and an actual head unit. Keyless entry is an option on the SR, but not standard. Both the SR and SR5 have the same traction control and 4x4 setups. You can also get a SR5 in dual cab long bed - which I have and absolutely love.

My '17 SR5 performs great with the factory traction control, but it is no substitute for a locker. I still will slip tires and have to wind up to bounce over obstacles I'd crawl over with a rear locker. It hasn't held me back yet, but it is a noticeable difference. If I were rock crawling on 35s in Colorado I'd definitely get front and rear lockers. Even though I have OBA already, I'd skip over the ARB air lockers and probably go with the Harrop / Eaton electronic lockers.

Agreed. I'm not the kind of guy that buys a modified truck. But some do. And yes, both could take a hit, but the SR more so.

    Yes.

Honest question. If you're buying an identically modified truck, which one do you WANT more, the Pro of the SR?

Keyword is want. As you know, what people want has more pull on their pocketbook than what they need.

A fun exercise would be to have those 2 trucks posted on this site. Have a control group of 100 potential buyers. If both trucks were listed at the same price, I'd say 99/100 buy the Pro (There's always one) As you increase the price of the Pro, you'll slowly begin to turn more buyers towards the SR.

Sounds the same as buying new, right? Thats because it is the same.

ALSD is just computer controlled braking, simulating an LSD. The e-locker actually locks the axles in the rear.

He says that the Sport has the smaller rear end that causes all the problems. He does not mention the SR. Is the wider rear end only available on TRD? Also (and sorry if this is a dumb question) is it the rear axle that is longer?

    Thanks
