4x4 Van (and other) Conversion Talk/Help Thread

    This threads for anybody wanting to discuss converting a 2wd to 4x4.

    Anybody know much about 4x4 conversions on vans? or could be other rigs you wanted to convert.... There has to be some of you guys that do.

    I know there's a couple of companies that are in the business of doing 4x4 conversions. But the cost is outrageous, so I'm wondering what you could piece together that'd be equally as good or better, if you source the parts and did it yourself etc..

    The ultimate goal here is an overland rig, to live out of... Possibly a E350 box van or Ambulance.

    Some of the questions I have are....
    What typically are people using in terms of axles and transfer cases..? And anything other thing you'd need to make it happen? And best places to source all the parts etc..?

    I'm all ears.

    All I've ever heard is never start with an ambulance. The wiring is usually a mess and they can be rather messy in general.

    Other than that, I'd be looking at an e350 with the v10 or a 7.3.


    That's about as far as I've ever gotten.

    Been a fan of 4x4 vans since the late 70's.
    Couple companies back then converted them.
    I think dodge even had a dedicated vendor maybe in Indiana to do them.

    I believe they are still there.

    Best bet is a used Sportsmobile. Google "4wd van conversions". Quigley is the big player. Sportsmobile uses Quigley components for their 4WD van conversions.

    The only factory 4WD van is Mercedes and their older clone when Mercedes owned Chrysler and those are diesel Mercedes engines and drivetrain. Plenty of used Mercedes 4WD vans available for $50k+ but it's a diesel Mercedes.

    I'm trying to learn about what all different components will work to do it.
    It's not just for the vans, but could be a cab over truck or whatever..

    For instance I've heard some people talk of using F250 axles etc, so what else can be used.?

    I'd like to create a list of components that are usable, numerous transfer cases and axles, the pros and cons of them etc..

    I think you'd have to dive deep into what components Quigley uses for their 4WD conversions. Quigley has been the big player in 2WD-to-4WD for a long time.
