I have a '17 TRD Pro with 1" lift all around and the full SSO slimline front bumper. Currently running stock wheels (7" wide according to some online sources) with 265/75r16 BFGs.

It's close to time for new tires so I want to take advantage of the Labor Day sales. My wheels are scratched to $h!^ from getting stuck in the mud, so I am also going to buy the DX4 Terrain bronze wheels (17x8.5" wide).

If I understand correctly, my current wheels have a +13 offset. The Terrains come in +10 (so 3mm farther out) or -6 (+16mm out).

I am torn between 285/70r17 or 305/65 -- I also see 295/70 available but those are almost an inch taller (0.8" center cap to tread).

My only reluctance with the 285's is the width with respect to the rim. My current ratio 7" to 265mm -- is almost exactly the same ratio as 8.5" to 305mm.

With the slimline, I don't think I'll rub, but would hate to get that wrong. 305's are also $100 more per tire!

    What say you??

I guess my basic question is - Are 285's too narrow for an 8.5" wheel?

I have. Can't draw any conclusion with all the variables.

    TRD Pro +1"
SSO Slimline with Stage 2 clearance wings (adds significant clearance up front - which is where I read the most rubbing comments)
3mm wider offset wheels (or 16mm but that seems a bit much)

Sorry folks, I am an engineer.

Nah you're fine but you're gonna have to cut to get em to fit. People do it all the time.

With your offset and UCA's it'll depend where you cut.

a CMC is likely and fender trimming as well. Others here will be able to clarify much more.

Edit: also whatever tires you're looking for or at should have a width range example 7 to 8.5" ect.

7-10" wide wheels work for the tires sizes mentioned. 285/70r17 would still require some trimming with 4.75" backspaced wheels without a CMC chop or changing upper control arms (UCA). Larger diameter tires will necessitate one or both the CMC Chop and UCAs. That's based on the current wheel and tire sized on my 19 TRD OR.

Have you checked out the 255 “skinny” tires? There are Cooper ST Maxx in 255/80/17 that look good.

    17x8.5 -6 offset with 285/70 BFG TA KO2

Went for -6 based on a number of trucks posted with 17x8.5 -10 offset - we shall see.

Will advise once on the truck. I am not going to mount them right away, have a bit of tread to run out on the current ones.

I am looking at purchasing a set of DX4's in -6 too. I'm only wanting a 275 though. Curious to see what yours will look like.
