I have an 08' 4x4 crew cab tacoma off road package. 6 spd manual tranny and only 50k miles. I down shifted to pass some one doing about 25 mph and all the sudden after depressing the clutch and giving it gas i hear a loud pop and lost all forward accelaration in which i then coasted to a stop in the middle of the road (I have down shifted many times before and this has never happened.) i come to find out the pad had sheared off from the center peice of the clutch pad WOW cheap sheet metal to hold it all together... i will post pics later or you can just look at my photos ... long story shorrt the toyota stealership which i origianlly bought the truck from is over 30 miles from where i live and it took them 6 days to tell me it wasnt under warranty and no i couldnt have a loner car...... 1047$ later and alot of unanswered question. i got my truck back with another crappy stock toyota clutch, aisin clutch pad broke cheaply made ... i know that they make a super charged xrunner with the same tranny i hope it doesnt have the same clutch assmbly because it wont handle the extra torque... im so embarrassed of my truck now the reason they wouldn't cover it is cause they said it was abuse.... It does say TRD on the side of my truck along with off road package ...... but cant handle its own torque? this is crap has anyone else ever had this problem

They said it was wear and tear and abuse....!?!? It's enclosed in the bell housing and it's not burned up from riding it...

Plus if it was a burned up clutch it wouldn't have had enough grab to shear it off yano

I know my 08 has the weakest clutch of any vehicle I have ever owned.

I think you made a mistake letting them install a stock plate, it probably won't last any longer then the one that just failed on you

What part actually broke? TOB, cluch disc or pressure plate? Just because on dealer claims abuse doesn't mean they actually know or that'll be the end of it. Tell them to call the regional rep and have them check it out. It's well know that 2Gs have clutch assembly issues

I know and I asked them about that I said can they use the one they have in the super charged XRunner those should be more of a stage III and they said no.... I was kinda over a barrel as I need my truck for work and it was 30 miles away at the dealership it would have cost me alot to have it towed back home... I wanted a URD but they said they wouldn't warrant the work... They weren't helpful

I believe there is a tsb out on this exact failure. It specifies that it should be covered to 5 years or 60K. Not sure where I read that, but somewhere on here. The key word I believe would be clutch disk failure if you want to search for it.

With some of the experiences I've had with my Tacoma, and the things I see posted here, sometimes I think the Tacoma's reputation is no longer deserved.

I baby mine, no off roading, and I'm running into issues now that I'm over 50k. Some of my biggest complaints it always had though.

New and long term included: Intolerably loose steering, clock spring going with the airbag light on 100% of the time now, some various new interior rattles, interior fan ticking, retarded electronic control system that makes driving the manual transmission less than ideal, ABS system that I'm convinced is going to get me into a serious wreck some winter (but I'm afraid to disable it for insurance purposes)...

I guess that's the bulk of it.

I've had old Saturns that went into the high hundred thousand mileage range with nearly no problems, and when they got to that mileage, they were still a pleasure to drive. My latest complaint with my Tacoma is the steering. It bothers me to the point that I don't even enjoy driving anywhere, and I always used to love to drive.

Hey update to this TSB, ....Guess what I talked to Toyota today and they say the TSB PDF that is on here and 10 other sites is wrong and that this exact clutch problem is NOT covered under the 60 month 60,000 mile warranty But by the comprehensive warranty 36 month or 36,000 mile. I honestly believe someone at Toyota fucked up! I was informed it was amended march 12, 2010. I am furious and feel there will be a law suite coming. I don't see how they say that whether it happens at 50k miles like mine went out at or 8k miles like taco supremes did that it's driver error. I may have driven like a grandma for those 50k miles and one day needed to actually put pedal to the metal to get out of the way of a fire engine or to pass another car (my situation) or just towing a trailer up a hill for goodness sake it doesn't matter cause it's the same defective part. And to make matters worse they put the exact same part number back in. And I asked them if there was another part they could put in maybe something stronger or possably off the supercharged xrunner which puts out way more torque and they still said NO! I didn't find out about this tsb until the day after I paid for it and the tsb says use a totally different part. and I paid to have the same defective part put back in and was lied to..... ERRRR Toyota dealership says it's abuse and has never seen any like this and that it was driver abuse... He had never seen this tsb before and there for wrote it off as abuse .... After giving him the tsb number stated that it's still out of warranty,... So because this retard over at the toyota dealership doesn't want to admitt he was wrong I now have to go to another dealership and get a second consultation from another guy. My question is how do you abuse a clutch other than riding the clutch and burning it out.....? Was there a warning label on the truck somewhere that I missed that says don't mash down on the gas as it might break the cheap under rated clutch pad in your vehicle ? Cause if I would have known they were using parts that can't Handel the torque of the truck I wouldn't have bought it!!! Plain an simple!! This should deffinatly be a recall item I guess we are just waiting till somebody dies from this before it's taken serious... But I tell you what I bet they don't use this same part on ther new 2010 models and that rite there will cover the law suite I'm bout to pull over these shady unhelpful illiterate people. Comments are all welcome

    Too few to list.
Do you have glazing or any signs of abuse on your clutch pads?
