    Hi there
    Anyone tried using hood latches for front anchoring a canoe?

    I'd use some kind of clear film where the straps contact the paint - I drove 3,000 miles to Tetons and back with the kayaks on top and there was a bit of wear on the clear coat. I'm going to put a little bit of it around the edge where the strap is.

    As far as secure, they're fine for security bow lines, but I still use my OEM and Thule Xporter racks as the primary strap down points. I wouldn't use the hood bolts for primary straps, that's just me. They're all little 10mm bolts.

    Thanks for this. Will definitely use roof rack. Shopping for one at the moment. I like the clear film idea. Which rack do you prefer? Any favorites? And more importantly are they noisy when not in use?

    I've got the factory rack on the cab, and then the Thule Xporter that mounts to the bed - here's what my setup looks like:

    TetonBackroad.jpg

    Works great for both 'yaks, and keeps them at a low profile. I want to get a canoe soon - I will probably use the same setup to carry one.

    The factory rack on the 3rd gen is the same as the 2nd gen, and it's fine for what it is, and its cool party trick is when you're not using it you can fold it out of the way so that it's aerodynamic and thus zero wind noise and drag. It's rated to support 100lbs max (dynamic).

    Here's what the factory rack looks like:

    A lot of people go with the "prinsu" style rack. I've never had one but a lot of people swear by them - they're very versatile. I don't know about wind noise on these - maybe someone with one can chime in on that.

    Other companies make a similar design, Frontrunner, ARB (I think).

    Be careful with the Toyota rack if you have an early 2020. They moved the shark fin antenna and it interfered with the rearcross bar. They moved it back later in the run.

    DIY nylon straps on the fender bolts, pretty easy, they fold under hood when not in use.

    I have been looking for the factory rack and it seems even the dealer couldn't find it? I'm in Canada. But you would think I could order it online????

    Nope, they come up through the hood crack and you close it on them;

    I've had them for 12 years now on our subaru and no paint damage at all..
    Rather this than putting a rope up over the front to the bumper- no question.

    I'll look those up. Is it the one that fold into the rail rack?
