10 or 6 ply TIRES!?!?

When I'm alone in the woods and 50+ miles from anything, I'm happy to be running 10 ply tires and carrying a full size spare.

I have 10plys and I got them because of rocks. That’s the only reason why. I have had them really low psi and no problems. They are stiff and heavy AF. So if u are just a weekend worrier and nothing to crazy go 6. Ur gas will suck with the 10plys. I got 13mpg (which is not bad) towing my wife’s car and that’s with the truck and car fully loaded. I think a little over loaded. That was from Vegas to Houston at it’s a 6spd. But it’s a truck. So u really should not be complaining about that anyway.

 

I ran load range E for years and recently switched to C. Miss the 10 ply's. The 6's ride so much different, I don't like how much they flex, I keep adding air to get to sweet spot.

Just ordered a 6ply after having 35in 10ply Toyo MT’s for 30,000+ miles. Ride has been ROUGH on the 35s but they never had a puncture. Even had the entire weight of the truck drop on the sidewall after a spindle bolt gave up on life but no damage to the tire. Also hit a few of those parking lot curbs going 35-40mph by accident and they made it out alive. Of course there's the off-roading abuse also. 10ply (or E-rated ) tires are tanks.

But the main reason i didn't like them on the daily is because it feels like a bomb goes off every time I hit a pothole. If there's ever heavy weight loaded in the bed, the ride would be MUCH smoother just because the springs and shocks are more flexed out.

I'm an occasional off roader so the 6ply 33's made sense. So far they drive much smoother but not as smooth as I expected. 75% of the roughness is likely coming from the 6'' Fabtech lift.

 

I run 10ply.
Is it overkill maybe.
For me the gas mpg has hasn’t really changed much. Didn’t buy for mpg anyway.
Seems doing little off road stuff I need to hone my skillls. Caught a stump today against the sidewall figures I’d be sol. But not a flinch from the tires at all.
No winch no friends so the 10ply is like buying expensive oil and parts!!

Anyway, I've had one set of E rated in a Michelin Defender and every other tire I've had on my T-100 and my Taco have been P-metric/6ply.
I'll never buy another set of 10 plys again. Yes, if you're an avid off-roader, they are much more durable. I hated the way they rode...and then they proceeded to last about 70,000 miles!
But I'm a bit old school and don't like the tooth-jarring, bolt loosening ride that some of these guys do.
I still run Defenders, just not the heavy ones. I'll probably go with Falkens next but they won't be 10 plys.

 

I always run 10 ply on my Taco. I am on am off of job sites all day long and in my old Silverado I averaged 3-4 nails or screws per year. When I got my Tacoma in 2017 it came with 10 ply tires (TX Baja package). In the 14 years I have been doing my job this was the first time I never got nails. I am on my 3rd set of 10 ply tires on this truck at 175k now and have never (knock on wood) had a puncture. I also average 70-80k of life in a set of E Codes. P codes of my Silverado(heavier truck) were done at 40-45k.

Last year I was driving across I80 in NJ and a truck lost it’s dunnage. A Mercedes i front of me swerved left and if I made the same move I probably would flip. I took two 4x4-8s across my lane and waited for the sounds of bent suspension or tires losing air. But nothing. I stopped at the next exit, drove up a curb and crawled under the truck. Nothing. I had my work meeting and in an hour drove back across the same section of road. No less than three dozen cars, trucks and SUVs were on the side of the road with an armada of tow trucks lining up.

 

I'll only ever run 10 ply tires. 6 ply wouldn't last me long

 

An 11 year old thread, wow. They haven't made 6, 8, or 10 ply tires since they stopped making tire belts from cotton. That's going back to the 70's I'd guess.

They do make P, C, D, and E rated tires that will fit a Tacoma.

 

I haven't picked up any nails since i switched to 10 ply. They are a little heavier but i like the peace of mind

they were both broken at the bottom... had them replaced a few weeks ago. Not sure why the image i uploaded is sideways

 

yea, I drove with nails in my tires and pulled them out with no damage
