question about low tire pressure light

the low tire pressure light came on yesterday even though all 5 tires are at 28 psi. I had just gotten a carwash, I don't know if that had any thing to do it. Any ideas? The truck has been restarted probably 8 times since then and its still on.

 

Check the manual, you can reset it with the button under the dash by the steering column

 

X2...I've had this happen with a cold temperature drop. If everyting looks good just re-set it per the instructions in the manual.

 

same thing happened to me today..it was cold and raining last night. Tire Pressure light came on. Check the pressure and it looks good. I will be resetting today.

 

Yeah everytime it gets cold my TMPS warning light always comes on. Its quite an annoyance and leaves me worried if i really have a nail or something.

 

I hate that damn light and have learned to ignore it. I've had a couple bad ones ( TP sensors) and of course had to pay someone to replace them. The light is on again, the tire pressure's are right on and I'll just check the tire pressure once in a while and learn to enjoy the light.

 

temp here got down to like 17 F last night and was 29 today. I will reset the light . Thanks guys

 

Hold the reset button and wait for three flashes of the light. If you have all 5 at the same psi and it still stays on, there's a sensor problem.
Dealer can read the pressure of each sensor if you really wanted to find out.

 

My tps illuminated at around 4900 miles. The tires looked fine; so I didn't bother to check any further. Plus my 5000 mile service was coming up. Anyway, the dealer took care of it.
However, I did read a tread a few months back that said sometimes the spare tire can cause the tps light to activate. Don't know how true it is, but maybe you can check it also.

 

Check your spare tire. It has a sensor on it, too. Mine was on for a month or so, but finally got around to checking. Sure enough it was low. Filled it up, it's been off since.

Take your pressure in all 5 tires down 5lbs hit re-set, then fill up to where you normally run your tires.

Example, I run 32lbs. I drop all 5 ( spare inc) to 27 then hit reset, I then fill up to 32lbs. I do this for winter because of the drastic changes.

 

Does anyone know how sensitive the tpms's are? It would be good to know to set them where they would do some good!

 

I asked the service dept at Toyota that question and I got varying responses between 3 and 5 lbs. From what I've seen with my sensors, that range seems about right. The light comes on when my spare drops that much pressure. I haven't had an issue with the cold yet though so i'm thinking it's closer to 5 lbs.

 

Yeah, that sounds about right- a steep drop in temperature seems to drop tire pressure as much as 4 psi- enough to make the light come on.

 

If you reset it and it still doesnt turn off, welcome to my world. Mine has been on since september, and it doesnt reset when i try. I have to wait till warm weather comes and it turns off on its own. I hate this feature, havent had sensors since 2006.

 

Light only blinks when computer recieves no signal from a programmed sensor. If sensor is not reading the psi that is in the tire, the computer has no way of knowing. If all tires are equal and computer is reset, then it comes back on, you have a problem.
For the sake of covering all the bases:

Set all 5 tires psi, push button until light blinks 3 times. If light comes back on, check tire psi again. If all tires are equal, there is a problem with a sensor.

 

I reset the light and I appreciate your help! I think the sharp temp drop is the reason for the light coming on

 

The dealer bent or stripped the valve stem external threads on my sensor unit by not replacing hubcap properly.
Is it possible to rethread the stem so I can put a new extender on the valve stem?
