I'm 100% new to Toyota and the Tacoma world. I came from a Dodge Ram 5.9 magnum to a Tacoma.

I love everything that I have with my Tacoma. There is just little things that I miss with my big V8. Will the ovtune open that up? The Tacoma has more hp than the 5.9 magnum does. My main question is is it worth the money to buy the Ovtune to open up the Tacoma to its full potential.

Long story short. I had to buy a tuner for my 2002 Dodge Ram 1500. Because they put what they called a death tune/flash to it at the dealership to keep it from pinging because the plenum gasket would separate. Once I got rid of that the truck was amazing.

My Tacoma is parked next to my 5.9 Dakota. They are at opposite ends of the spectrum.

I don't have a tune, and certainly it would be an improvement, but a tune on a 3.5 is never going to make a push rod V8 torque curve.

5.9... almost did that myself in 2000’ish. Bought the 318 instead. It was a pretty good ride while I had it.

It’s a de-tuned Lexus engine. Forged crank and rods. Ready to go. The best mod I have done by far. Single table shift map is a game changer. Do it.

It will be the same with the Taco. Jump in the deep end and get that bottom end torque that is hiding under the PoS Stock tune.

Now don't laugh at me but my first truck was a 1994 S10 2.2 5 speed. I went to the ram because I loved it and I got a hell of deal. So went from 4 cylinders to 8 and now to 6. Lol

Yes. The tune transforms the motor (and AT if you have one).

No more WOT to get moving, typically better MPGs, and just a very normal feel to it. A big driveability increase.

You're buying software that changes the way the engine management system deals with air/fuel delivery, engine timing, transmission shift points, etc.

I don't have it, but OVTune is worshiped by many on this site.

Hahahaha! I missed that part in the answer.

Basically, a 2mb file that turns the Taco on its ear.

I was going to respond and say ‘foul’, nobody worships it and that’s a bit extreme. Then I thought about it for a bit, and there may be some truth to it.

I was never in a tune it or sell it mode, but admit it was money well spent for my 2018. For 2020, the return might be a little less but likely still worth it.

    this and that...
i wouldnt get too hung up on 4 cylinder, 6 cylinder, 8 cylinder, and more about usable power. my sequoia is running that big 5.7 iforce. its silky smooth, and has pretty good passing power. the thing about that though, is the sequoias motor has to carry all that weight even though its stock. my sport on the other hand is also stock (no lift or armor) and has a moderately displaced 3.5. it is modded with an sb intake, custom hurst s/s, urd mk2 ypipe, trd exhaust, sprint booster, and flashed with ovt premium sfob. the taco would absolutely dust the sequoia. it feels like a solid 14s truck. not earth shattering, but its quick and nimble and really thats what i wanted out of this build; a solid street sweeper. is ovt worth it? yes.

Haha. Let me rephrase my question. When I bought the programmer for my ram from superchips. It was a whole thing I plugged in and then set the tune. Is that the same with Ovtune?

A bit different. OBD connection dongle with cable, and windows software to drive it.

Exactly! I love how nimble the truck is! Just like making it a little bit better. I said it once and I'll say it again. I can never leave anything alone. Lol. The ram was and still is stock for the most part except for some cosmetics but I still had to change things. This truck will get the same treatment

Like @RushT said, you'll get an adapter that will also allow you to do ECU Customizations and such. You'll need a PC or Bootcamp on a Mac.

There are some good instructions at ovtuned.com under the Resources menu.

This is all custom software developed here by an talented guy.
