    I have mods
No worries, I'm working on creating a Windows 10 USB installer for a laptop my daughter gave me. I'll probably give it back to her once I have Win10 up and running on it. Just text me when you are ready.

I love the Mac user interface when it comes to using the track pad to quickly cycle through apps and windows for screen sharing (and research papers back in the old school days). I know windows machines can get pretty close and maybe I’m not fluent enough with windows to find exact equivalents but it is a big factor. I’m in the situation where the power of a desktop would help me do little video projects once in awhile and running a bunch of apps while screen sharing.

So I’m a fan of Carey Holzman and watched enough of his build videos to feel like I could assemble a desktop pc if I had a parts list that was tried and true for video editing - gaming isn’t really anything I have time for although I appreciate it and watch those old school gamer videos I think I posted on here some time ago. I’m not a huge fan of windows but I like the performance you can get for probably 1/3 of the cost of a Mac.

Used iMacs in the $2k range are kind of the alternative to a $1k pc for me. Are there any pre-assembled desktops you can buy that aren’t big name companies and use better parts?

If you’re not doing anything that requires a crazy pc, just go to Costco and buy a nice Dell or HP Prebuilt. Comes with the monitor and everything

Yeah with Mac you are paying a premium for the brand. I've used Mac almost exclusively for all of my adult life, it's pretty much the norm in the creative industry. Not sure why but it just is. But I don't personally think they are as reliable as they used to be and it's a lot of money to pay just for the name.

I'll probably get a Windows laptop myself when the time comes. Still use Mac at work since that's what the company buys but I just can't justify the cost at home, especially since I don't really freelance anymore.

I do video editing for work and process photos as my hobby. Also my 2013 MacBook with 8gb ram is lagging with the amount of processes it has to carry out now that I’m keeping Zoom meetings running with 10 or so browser windows (other than tw lol) and folder diving on Google drive to keep my room functioning for work. I’ve had good luck with machines lasting 7 plus years so I like investing in something with higher capabilities that won’t lag in a few years considering the functionality I usually need from it. Plus at the end of this year I’ll be looking to go into the education materials making world and would like to have a machine that can do video game editing type stuff. That’s the direction I’m personally interested in moving towards and I’d like to get my feet wet this year if opportunities come up.

edit: I just don’t know much about bottle necks in computer performance - ie how better a current 8gb ram machine could be than my old MacBook due to other advancements in newer machines

If you're doing video rendering and photo processing, the computer needs to be relatively beefy similar to a Gaming PC. I built mine as a gaming PC, but all I use it for is editing videos and running engineering software. I'd say put maybe $1,000 towards a build and you'll have a very capable machine for years to come.

I'm runs Flight Simulator 2020 nicely.

If you could make a parts list it would be very greatly appreciated. I may still go another route - not confident enough in how a windows machine will suit my needs yet.

If I had to cut costs it would be on mouse / monitor stuff that I could upgrade along the way. I have a projector to watch movies on for fun so I don’t need a super nice monitor. $900 for the main components. If $100-300 makes a big difference I could be persuaded to do a little more.

I’ve had a Mac and a pc pretty much the entire time since 2008. I think iOS interface is better for track pad navigation and that’s literally all that’s keeping me from abandoning the idea of a Mac - it’s just that wonderful. The full screen app four finger swipe toggle got me through hundreds of pages of term papers and going from music recording software to video editing software intuitively in hundreds of hours of the bigger projects I did for my old job. I don’t really have those big projects but now it’s keeping all the info at the flick of a wrist I have to keep ready to show students and keep their attention that I like now. If I could program the exact same track pad functions into a pc it would be the end of my Mac life lol.
