Define frustration. Order custom wood shift knob. Spend $90. Wait a month and a half. Shift knob shows up, and it is freaking beautiful. Gorgeous, flawless grain, hand turned and polished, laser engraved. It doesn’t belong in a humble Toyota, it belongs in something much more expensive.

And three minutes later I find out the vender epoxied in the wrong size threaded insert. :annoyed:

    I quit for the day.

Had that happen to me before. In my case, they didn’t drill the hole deep enough into the knob...so if I had used the shifter, it was 3” higher than it should have been and I couldn’t shift into 1st, 3rd, and 5th.

Email them, sure they will fix it.

Already did. Vendor is sending out a thread reducer. I give him credit it seems like he’s trying to make it right but the frustration is real especially when the knob is already three weeks behind schedule.

Progress made. Found a bolt in my box of miscellaneous junk (everyone hangs onto extra bolts and nuts forever right?) and found a bolt that threads into my new shift knob with the mystery thread size. Based on measurements (shank diameter and threads per inch), I have a knob threaded for M12x1.25.....which would be perfect if I had a stick shift truck.

I have an adapter bushing on order, should be in next week. In the meantime I’ll just sit around and admire it on the workbench.

The may be 'qualified'. But that doesn't mean that they do good work. Qualified is not what it used to be. Unfortunately it's usually after they're hired that people realize how useless they are. Them they're stuck with them.

Unless the workers are union, most dealerships, garages will just let people go. If it not working out. It would be a waist of time going through the interview, training process. if it doesn't work out.

This is why a thorough background check is so important these days. Most dealership on this area won't hired any unless they come from another dealership with years being at one location.

When I got hired at a Mercedes dealership. They were up front on what they expected out of me. Instead of me trying it out I decline the position. The only reason I applied for the job is to learn how to work on German vehicles, instead of American, Japanese. I guess it a change of pace. They wanted me to work on used vehicles and older Mercedes. I wanted to work on new Mercedes. The dealership think techs needs a engineering degrees to work on the new Mercedes. I went to a Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche dealership instead. Great place to work for.
