I have 80,000 on my 2.7, I havent had any problems with the engine. Oil changes, thats pretty much it. Then again its only at 80,000.

my friend has 500,000 miles on his inline four in his 1999 tacoma. I don't really know how much toyota has changed the engine since then, since i have the 4.0 1grfe, and thats kind of what i have been focusing on. I take extremely good care of my engine, change spark plugs every 30k, change oil every 5,000 miles, new radiator fluid every 50k. I am about to cross 100k with my 4.0 and it still starts up and cranks like the day I drove it off the lot. I am hoping for 300k on my engine before I start running into problems. The headers seem to want to go eventually no matter how much you baby it.

ya 3vz ive never had but I watch them putter around and I dont know how those are.
    *105hp.
But its not a matter of bragging. Just saying, to call the 22re motor not that reliable because of the plastic timing chain guides, is laughable.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to cram a massive beastly motor into my 85 and just go full out rock crawler. But $$$ makes that difficult.

yes they blow head gaskets if they over heat, like any motor. Add the fact that a lot of the trucks that had the 22re didn't have a tachometer, bad/unknowing drivers constantly over revving the engine is asking for head gaskets to blow.

Now I'll brag about my 3.4L V6, thats true, because overall I think its a better engine and designed better if i'm comparing the two

No offense but that doesn’t make sense, an I4 is going to be running higher rpm’s than a V6 for going up steep hills and such. We don’t drive them at 35 mph lol

22re is a great engine for an 80s 4 cyl but people will be damned if you point out any flaws, Toyota knew they dun goofed with the timing chain guides as both the 3RZ and 2TR both have metal backed guides... no it doesn't guarantee reliability, some on Yotatech have had theirs crack at 120k many have cracked at around 200k. The fact that it doesn't have much horsepower, people have to rev them higher aiding to them overheating.

There's a reason 3.4 and even 2TR/3RZ swaps are pretty popular among the older trucks

Never had a problem with “overheating” due to running higher rpm in my 2.7L, needle stays where it was. Search “engine trouble”, “engine problem” and “timing cover leak” on TW like I did and see what shows up most- hint...it’s not the 2.7L ;)
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/help-power-steering-pump-leak-or-timing-cover-leak.676163/
I think both engines are pretty reliable and I did research even before I bought my truck, but the I4 was my choice. You made yours.

Same here, at almost 70k on my 2016. Oil changes, spark plugs because why not, and rear diff because service records show it was last done at 30k. Next on my list is brake fluid, trans, and coolant

This is also accurate. But generally, if you have an I4, you got it for a reason which meant you didn't need the V6. Commuting, light hauling, etc. They aren't generally hauling heavy, towing as much, or as lead footed. That's just been what I've seen in general and of course there are exceptions.

I must be an exception then, much of what you say appears to be speculating what owners of the I4 do. My 2.7L Access Cab is rated for 1500 lb load and I’ve had a good half ton in it no problem. A DC 4x4 with a V6 is rated much lower load capacity due to the 350-400 lb heavier curb weight. True I don’t tow, don’t need to with a 6 ft bed for the things I haul. (If I towed a heavy load then I would get the V6 with tow package). I’m as lead footed in my Taco as I am driving my 252 hp turbo accord or any V8 I’ve owned.

There's a 1.2 million mile Taco with an I4 (only 400,000 on the current engine). But, he didn't get there by mashing it all the time. He drives a lot for his work distributing medicine.

Both the 2.7L and V6 are good engines from what I’ve read here. So we can agree on that perhaps :)

For sure! I guess I was more referring to drive style. No question it has to work harder to do the same job.

I’m going to go against you there on the 22r/re. That, in my opinion of course, was the most well built reliable 4 cylinder ever produced across any brand for its time. Nothing could compete with that engine as far as reliability goes in the 80s. Yes it was an absolute dog. I know I had an 86 with the 22r 4 speed and it couldn’t get out of its own shadow but it would never leave me stranded and always wanted more.

I have nothing but love for my 2.7l Access Cab AT 4x4.. It isn't a speed demon, but it does all i need it to do, even pulls my tractor on occasions.. If i wanted to go fast, I wouldn't even have looked at a Tacoma..

On the 3rd Gen Tacoma you could get a 4 Cylinder 5 Speed MT in the SR for 2016 and 2017 only, that Model was cancelled after 2017. The 2018 thru 2020 MT is only available on the Sport, Off Road, and Pro and all are V6 6 Speed MT.

4cyl got no balls, they sucked in the old regular cab trucks and they suck now. Now my Honda CRV 4cyl is awesome, runs like a raped ape.
