2.7L RWD Oil Pan Replacement

Wondering if anyone has any resources on replacing 2.7L rwd lower oil pan? Is this a DIY job? It seems like the 4WD models you have to remove the front differential.

Looking under my truck it is very clearly rusted and leaking. It seems like there would be enough room to just undo the bolts and remove it. Anyone do one of these before?

Also looking at Rock auto they sell a gasket but I was under the impression Toyota just uses a sealer.

Any help much appreciated.

OP - there are 2 oil pans shown in the diagram you posted?

The one at the bottom appears to be -> NO. 2 OIL PAN SUB-ASSEMBLY

Likely the easiest to get to.

I see -> OIL PAN SUB-ASSEMBLY just above it.

Looks cut-n-dry to me unless you are going after the upper pan.

You will be prompted for a town/zip code. I use -> Las Cruces and 88001. Once inside follow the yellow brick road. After you have drilled down, there are details on removal/reassembly.

Likely available as well at your own public library.

 

From the Toyota Shop Manual:

Toyota uses FIPG Sealer ( Form In Place Gasket ) with no other gasket.

 

No gasket, its just sealer.

Split the pan from the block with a putty knife and a small hammer.

Pro tip: Clean the oil strainer/pickup screen while the pan is off.

Clean pan with razors and scotch bright or a wire wheel.

 

Take note of the seal packing and how it’s applied in the picture above.
I’d personally just go all the way around the bolt holes.
I don’t see what it would hurt.

 

Less is more with Toyota pans, but I do dab a tiny bit on the outer edge.

The problem is the small 10mm bolts pulling in and compressing more silicone can possibly strip the threads.

I really appreciate you guys!! Can you also confirm that there is enough room to remove the oil pan on 2.7L RWD? It looked kind of tight under there and I read the 4x4's are alot harder.

 

What would be the best way to clean the strainer? Brake clean? Should I remove it and clean or just spray it down?

 

Yes, You can remove the lower oil pan without removing the engine on a 2X4 RWD 2TR-FE.

 

Yup unbolt it, clean and blow out if possible. Reinstall.

The 10mm bolts are critical, so torquing them is a good idea. They don't take much.

If you're worried, simply brake clean it from below and clean it as best you can.

 

I finally got around to trying it tonight. Just wanted to see if the bolts would come loose. A lot of them stripped the bolt head because they were so rusted. But I got all but one loosened towards the front of the pan. It's not so easy because there are power steering lines right there. Do you remember what ratchet/extensions you used? I had 1/4 and 3/8 ratchets,extensions, ujoint/wobbly extensions.... feel like I am missing something.

I don't think I'll be able to torque at least some of those bolts.

 

Patience wins the race. I couldn't tell you what tools to use.

Long ratchet extension and a universal joint 6 point shallow socket.

 

Okay I am back at it again I have all the bolts out and the seal broken. However I can't get the pan out. There is a cross member in the way and also it is getting caught against the oil strainer....

With the oil strainer out of the way it appears I would be able to remove the pan. However on reassembly that would be tricky to slide the new oil pan up there and reinstall the strainer with the pan in the way.

Anyone have any ideas? I was thinking maybe jack under the engine/transmission might give me a little extra room?

I think I would like to go the lift engine method. Anyone have any resources on doing that?

 

I have removed both the upper and lower oil pans on my 2.7L with the motor in the truck. I have a prerunner so if your truck is 5 lug, it may be different. All i had to do was remove the oil pickup and then slide the upper pan back. I do remember now though that i didnt have the trans in the truck, so maybe that's why i was able to get it out wihtout issue..

 

If your trans is still in and its getting in the way, maybe remove the transmission mount, support that end with a jack and raise the back of the trans up for a little more room? The motor mounts have some wiggle room, much more so than the trans mount
