My 2006 Tacoma is on it's last leg, what is the best way to sell it?

Every 5,000 miles, but I’ve been adding a quart every 2-3 days

 

Theres a lot of things that people stop for, the world stops and stares, because something doesnt look right and one of those is a toyota tacoma going to the yard its just not right man youre breaking the laws of god

 

How about $2500 and a case of beer

 

If someone from here buys the truck, I'd love to see updates on this

I think in california you cannot sell a car if it doesnt pass smog. Even if you make the buyer sign a disclosure if they bought it as is. If they ever want to return it, there is nothing stopping them.

Didnt mean to off as a downer just protecting you op. I remember somebody was asking legal advice since a guy he sold his car to a few years earlier requested a refund and was taking him to court. I guess the needed to get the car running cost more than what the buyer was willing to do.

I think what was determined was he was liable to give the money back even if they had an sold as is form signed bc the law states seller couldnt sell a car that was not smog legal. Legal contracts are automatically voided when it goes against a law.

Just an fyi. But i also know a lot of people who sold cars just like this and nothing happened.

 

I appreciate it, thank you. I am leaning towards going the Copart route to avoid liability issues, unless someone from out of state might have an interest. It’s a shame as I’m still actively using the truck. Unfortunately my smog certificate is due and I have to figure out my next move. Selling feels like my only option at this point

 

No worries. Ever tried getting it appraised at carmax? Doesnt hurt since its free and you dont have to worry about any liability issues.

 

If you own it out right and want to keep, could always look into getting a used car loan to fund the swap

 

You could sell the truck "as is where is for parts" you wont have any issues, the truck will either go to someone who fixes the issue & or it will go to Mexico.

put it on CL as someone else suggested for $3500, it will sell quickly

I'd buy it if I saw it on Craigslist because I could then sue the seller for the cost to repair. OP can only sell it to a dealer or a junkyard within Califiornia without being liable for the cost to repair the emissions issues.

 

Is it weird that I want another 2nd gen 2.7l Tacoma? I’m familiar enough with them and I actually find my truck a joy to use. Just that damn smog certificate expiring on me..,

It doesn't work like that, you have to change the title, not just the registration.

 

It's not defined within the law, it only says that all sold vehicles must have smog certificate from the seller unless it's going to a dealer or a salvage yard. I'm sure many cars are sold in that condition and if the buyer wanted to litigate it, it would be up to a judge to determine how the law applies to the specific situation.

Notes on a bill of sale saying "as is" "non-operational" or something else to the effect don't hold legal weight as far as the law is written, case law may say something else. OP is in a shitty situation where he has a vehicle that meets his needs but won't be able to legally operate it soon.
