What is left to accomplish to get back drivable?

 

Install new power steering rack, new intermediate steering shaft, new front coil overs, new wheels mounted and balanced, torque everything down and then alignment.

Getting the old rack out was the hardest part by far. It’s all downhill from here. Will probably do a little more work tomorrow then hoping to have it back on the road by my next kid free weekend.

 

Yeah, putting the rack back in is definitely not as tough as it is to get it out. Good luck!

 

What brand are you replacing it with?

 

I’m looking at the instructions for the total chaos cam guides and it looks like the LCA has to stay on the truck for the install,,,,,
Is that right? And is there any reason to buy new cams and hardware?
Wheelers has SPC cams and I’m assuming all cams are created equal..?..
Cam guides are from toytech but I don’t see new cams.

I bought a new Cardone rack from RockAuto. Didn’t want to deal with a reman unit or shipping this one back for a core charge. And a new OEM one from Toyota would have been $500-$600. I paid around $300 for new hoses and the new rack. I already removed the rubber bushings from the rack and have Energy Suspension poly bushings that will be going in with it.

 

OEM are superior to all. The aftermarket ones have a crappy design where that cam washer is only held in position by a little D shaped hole and that can strip out. A lot of posts on here about those failing. I know the Moog ones in general a bad but the SPCs are similar in design

 

Yeah, I have SPCs in my Moog LCAs right now and I don’t know how well they’re gonna hold up. Whenever I get around to renewing my OEM LCAs, I intend to go back to OEM cam hardware.

 

The only thing that makes me recommend a new OEM rack every time, is that it also comes with new OEM TRI's, so its really more like $300 for rack, $300 for TRI's.

I have a very low opinion of aftermarket TRI's lol.

 

I was looking at OEM racks and they were $600 plus $124x2 for outers plus boots, clamps, and tie rods. That’s rough considering a $350 aftermarket comes complete.

 

No but I'm heading to Nashville at the end of the month over a weekend so I could meet you in Louisville on the East or South side on 9/28 in the afternoon.

 

Yeah, I mean, the Cardone rack came with inner tie rods installed and I have my barely 6 month old greasable Moog outer tie rods I’ll be swapping over. I don’t ever wheel the truck hard but if the aftermarket parts fail, so be it. And shit, now that I’ll have removed the sway bar, replaced the rack and flipped the mounting bolts, I could probably swap the whole thing out in an hour if I ever have to mess with it again. Not that I want to...
