Whats up TW members of Alabama. So I will likely be moving to Birmingham here in Feburary as part of a 12 month residency with the VA hospital. Have never lived in the area and was hoping for some advice on where to live, things to do, etc. Not sure I'll be staying but entertaining the idea of buying a home / townhome rather than renting, but may end up just renting to. Hopefully will get to meet some of you and thank you in advance for the suggestions, input.

if only renting I would look for something off of 65 or 59. say trussville, fultondale, helena, alabaster, pelham, hoover. if renting a loft in birmingham they are outrageous in price and honestly the city of Birmingham isn't all that great.

apartments in most these areas will be significantly than a mortgage. renting is hit or miss on pricing.

my tops are pelham, helena, and parts of hoover if buying, these are in no order as they are all nice.

Thanks, we'll I wont meet my colleagues until I get there so kind of trying to scope out ahead of time where to start. That hotel looks great, maybe were I stay until I get around I heard mountain brook was a great area, its like an 18 min drive to the VA hospital which would be nice, I was also looking east, I heard to stay clear of west.

Thanks man! I may stay past 12 months, after the residency they give you placement options if you want to stay w/in the VA. Reason I thought about buying was for some odd reason, decent apartments are expensive in the desirable areas and as much as a mortgage, almost makes sense to buy and turn it into a rental if I move, sell, etc. I was looking at a few decent apartments just at $1000 price range in the southern parts like you mentioned, just gonna hate not having a garage. Not much as far as home or town home rentals either. Thanks for the help!
