Wondering about how many starts you got before replacing. Using Tacoma for a service business that requires about 25 starts per day.

There's not going to be an accurate number for that question but I do know that it would be a more simpler task replacing it on a 2WD vs 4WD tacoma. You will more likely will have a battery failure vs a starter failure in your scenario.

How long between trips? May be more economical in the long run to keep it running.

Way to many variables to try and gauge how long yours may last vs someone else’s.

Are they brushless and if not why not?

yes sometimes I keep it running but we have idling laws here and I got a company name on truck. Have been notified of pics of my truck in social media with post about being an “idling menace”

On a 4x4 v6 it’s a bitch of a job. Can’t access from underneath and the intermediate steering shaft is in the way through the wheel well. I saw a video where the guy took the starter apart (two pieces) so he could do the replacement through the wheel well without moving the steering shaft. Good idea but still didn’t look too fun.

Interesting. Just got done with yard work I’m going to read about this. I’ve done a lot of starters but never on a Tacoma. I wouldn’t have thought it would be difficult.

We had those here until recently. It was to curb auto theft, but it technically made remote starting illegal and a lot of people idle them to warm them up.

I'd think the fuel loss would be negligible compared to starting over and over, not to mention the added wear of short trips, especially if the engine never gets up to normal operating temperature.

Wonder what the dealership time sheet shows. This should be a simple job. I’ve had it done on my Rangers a few times. Think it was billed under 1hr.

From what I can find the estimated labor is around 125 bucks. If that’s true it’s what? Maybe 90 minutes or so?

about 90min Where do you find the labour cost?

Environmental here. Same reason they got those cars that automatically shut off and restart at a light.

Lol. That’s what the lady who posted pic of my truck on her social media wrote.

I live somewhere where idling is a mortal sin against the environment and everyone currently has a mask hanging on their rearview.

I used the google. Asked average labor cost for the job. Sounds about right for a starter although I’ve never had to split one in half to to r&r it so if your going to dyi probably plan a few hours.

When we lived near a small town in southern Illinois, I'd always leave my truck running when I went into Circle K. My wife was with me one day and gave me some crap about it. I said, "I've replaced a few starters in my life, just trying to put off the inevitable, besides it's a six speed, most people can't drive it anyway". She made some comment about all the farm kids around there knowing how to drive a manual transmission.
To that I replied that they were not the ones stealing trucks! She never said anything about it again.
I work in Louisville now. I shut it off and lock it.
