Was your dad a AMT or a operator? This Highway patrol Capt. told me later in the war(when?) . The USAF pulled the maint guys (AMT's) off of the missions so they could fit more equipment on board. If this was true for all of the EC-47's or not I do not know.
Did your dad do some of his training at Goodfellow AFB ? Thats where I was sent for about 7 months or so to learn the specialized stuff on the RC-135's and the RC-130's, and I guess the stuff was on the EC-47's as well --just a lot less of it. One more ? -- if your Dad was the AMT type like me , ask him when he went thru Goodfellow.

I wish my view was that good from the cockpit. Wherever you're landing disappears real fast and the shorter you are the worse it is. One of our short guys claims he hasn't seen his intended point of touchdown from about 300' on down since he started flying.

In-flight AMT on both EC-47s and RC-135s. We went through Goodfellow in 1975/76 (I remember this clearly because it was my entire kindergarten) before going up to Offutt. He was in-flight there from '77 to '81, when he moved to flightline avionics super and was issued his own truck, radio, and 2LT.

If you ever heard stories about an AMT who "accidentally" stabbed a Lt Col in the leg with a hot soldering iron in mid-mission (and still got an air medal for it) - that was my old man.

*it wasn't an accident - the fucker wouldn't move and he was blocking the crypto

Screw that! I fly a 182 a bit on my days off and am always mad that I can’t see out of the damn thing. I’m 6’4”! Wish the guy who made the “double ender” would produce a kit!

WAIT!! you said he was "and was issued his own truck, radio, and 2LT". ?? the issuing of a 2LT sounds interesting -- was he babysitting?
Cap-- ?? one more thing -- you said he went thru Goodfellow in 75/76? (even though it sounds like you got this pegged correctly) was not Viet Nam all but over in 75? Was he there before he went through the SS training at Goodfellow?. Forgive me for asking .
I am betting that trip to goodfellow was a follow up

Dallas to Memphis and back for a rescue mission today. This sweet boy was abandoned during the hurricane last week and is being taken in by a rescue group.

The only way I can share a video of my weekend...
    https://www.instagram.com/p/CE2iyFPgO0v/?igshid=13p18u56rd2gi

After about the 5th or 6th pass I went from "ooh, a helicopter!" to "OMFG, can't you find water somewhere else!?!?" :angrygirl:
Ended up camping directly under the flight path of a Chinook doing water drops on a forest fire. Water was about 4 minutes RT south of me and the fire was 8 RT north. He flew from the time I got there Friday until about 7pm. Saturday 1pm to 7pm with a 1 hour refueling break. Yesterday he showed up at 1130, went south for water, flew towards the fire and didn't come back again until about 330. Figured maybe he was having some mechanical issues, or maybe the snorkel thing picked up a stray fisherman (theres lots of them on the creek). Then he only did 2 or 3 passes for the day and was gone again. Weather was good so whatever was broken must not have been fixed.

The Forest Service Will ground aircraft a lot of the time because they’re putting the fire out. If their strategy on the fire is management, they’ll use aircraft to keep in under control and let it burn. Obviously if it’s threatening structures, they’ll fly their 8 hours every day.

the area is so steep i don't think they can really attack this one from the ground. and there are homes in the area. there was another (smaller, don't know the model) heli running up there with a bambi bucket too but he wasn't flying over me, he was going north from the fire and i was camped south of. just found it odd that 2/3 days they run about the same hours then nothing. mechanical issues seemed the most likely reason. weather was about the same all three days too.
