That >8,000 lb. winch is a waste of money.

    To be honest I hadn't even heard of them until recently and the things that I did hear was that they've gone downhill. But I thought I'd throw them in there just because they're pretty light.

    I surely wouldn't buy a winch based on weight.

    When you consider the curb weight, and all of the things we load these vehicles down with, even the Warn at 72# is pretty insignificant. In my case, the winch is about 1.3% of my total weight. This is based on a rough estimate of the weight I've added and the things I always carry.

    Or, were you just curious?

    Every pound you add will add up to a lot. Pick your weight carefully. I think saving where you can even if it's just a couple here a couple there will actually make for a better handling, riding, and preforming rig.

    When you are really trying to dial in your suspension set up, I can see how the additional weight up front on the coils could be a deciding factor, for some people.

    I figured the weight is part of the decision making process.
    Synthetic rope for sure.
    I thought I saw a Smitty 9.5 that was listed as 49 lbs. But not sure.

    Its the main reason I chose the wheels I did, was because of weight. Unsprung weight is a thing that people forgot, and it will directly impact the drive ability of any vehicle.

    the weight of the line definitely is. For me at least. It was a contributing factor for why I chose syn over steel

    The location of the weight plays a role, i.e. hanging out in front of the front axle, which is why every little bit matters. 400 lbs in the bed is going to be drastically different than 400 lbs on the roof or 400 lbs on the front bumper.

    Granted the difference between 64 lbs and 72 lbs likely won't have a significant effect, but it's still something to think about.

    I guess my point is that I would rather have a higher quality winch than a lightweight one. If the lightweight option is comparable in quality, then by all means, buy the lighter option.

    But, I have the heaviest option listed there. And, my 4runner handles great! I bought the appropriate springs for the weight I added.

    And, if you're trying to save a few lbs, go with a hybrid or low profile bumper, as opposed to a full plate steel bumper. I love mine!

    I have the smittybilt 9.5 xrc and it's been a decent winch. It eventually sounded like spoons in a garbage disposal so they sent me a new one for free under warranty. Now my second one is starting to sound a little angry. In hindsight, I wish I had gone with an Engo, maybe a warn. And it may be because I went with their XRC line and not the X20 line, but something to consider.

    Good point about the light weight vs quality. If all things equal light weight if not the best most reliable. I have the second heaviest option. I'm working on reducing and redistributing weight as best I can and constantly playing with my set up to get it dialed in. I am no longer associated with an armor manufacturer.
    My X20 has been flawless for the limited winching I've done with it, we'll see long term. It may be the waterproof rating idk.

    Sorry, I did not know that!

    I do understand and agree about weight distribution. This is why I built a sleep platform as opposed to buying a RTT (OK, I'm also cheap).

    I also just dumped my weatherproof gun case I kept the Hi-lift in on the roof for a soft case to hide it under my platform.

    The vast majority of weight I've added is under the platform and under the truck.

    No worries man no worries it's all for the better. Hey I completely agree with the RTT statement only place I'd put one is on a trailer that is then set up as a base camp. Otherwise we haul a tent and sleeping bags. Everything that may not be needed in the truck gets thrown out of the truck.

    I had two gun cases on my roof rack and ended up ditching them and distributing all the stuff throughout the truck. Even that was a distinctly noticeable difference, getting the weight off the roof. It's pretty fantastic.

    This is why I like camping trips. Leave all of the camping supplies at base camp and go hit the trails!

    That's awesome! I'm currently torn on what to do, as I just sold my Jurassic Park roof basket. I want a more low profile roof rack, but I like to remove it for winter, and other times it's not needed. I'm actually thinking of building my own.

    That's what we're more into camp in one spot hit the trails.
    Maybe keep the feet attached to the roof and figure out some quick detach method for the rest of the rack or just a couple bars

    I have an idea for a flat rack that would attach to the factory side-rails. I need some guidance about material (steel VS aluminum, thickness, etc).
