The reason I added it is because I loosened my drain plug playing in the rocks. Partway through a day of wheeling I noticed the axle was wet and sure enough, it was gear oil. It was a non issue since I carry extra fluids, but I lost almost a quart of oil. I got lucky that I noticed it and don't want to risk that again.

Lucky! I have been trying to find a used diaper. Think I'm gonna have to break down and buy new.

I'm planning to drive the beater Honda Accord in the winter months. 4 banger 5 speed with low compression in one cylinder, but at least she has a stick shift and VTEC so she still goes.

What about the drain and fill plugs that are smooth with an allen hex in the middle? I'm thinkin about switching to those.

This weather needs to be more decisive. All this toying around with gray sky and wind has got to go.

based on my current experience with Allen drain plugs, not a chance. The front diff fill plug is enough of a pain in the ass already..

I wonder if once could weld the drain plug shut and then just pump it out the fill hole. Or, add a drain on the back cover.

I was thinking smaller more flush to the diff so rocks wont touch. I'm kinda thinking about welding a piece on the skid like @EatSleepTacos welded on his diff. You do change your diff fluid right eatsleep?

I’ve seen that done as well. Weld the hole shut, and then replace one or two diff mounting studs with Allen key bolts. The draining is just a slow process I imagine.

Yes I change the fluid lol it’s just a few tack welds, so it’ll just get cut off.

Doing a cross country trip to Moab / Canyonlands / Needles / Dead Horse National Park. My tacoma is only stock lift, but slightly aggressive tires. Per the reviews / travel books it calls for "high-clearance" 4x4 to traverse for most of the driving trails. I understand usually High Clearance is 3+ inches. Does anyone have experience with driving stock lift around that area on any trails as some would state that is the preferred method.
