Ah darn, sorry to hear that wasn't funded. Doing work anywhere up there from Barcroft to Crooked Creek would be rad. What's your line of work?

Checking in live from the top of Red Cone at 12,800 feet.

    20200912_131342.jpg

But Mt Bross is looking pretty snowy from here!

    Editing to add:

Getting down from Red Cone was a white-knuckle experience!

    20200913_125119.jpg

I chained up after sliding down the first hill. And we decided to skip radical hill this year, heading straight to our favorite bar in Keystone instead.

The storm hit and now we are back in the 70’s during the day, but the mountains did get some snow.
Here’s a picture of the mountains north of Durango

Today was my attempt at Mt Bross.

    20200913_122357.jpg

I'm defeated by snow at 12,400'. :notsure:

There are tire tracks going higher, but they involve driving with one wheel off the trail and on the tundra instead. No way I'm getting to 14k feet this year.

    20200913_124837.jpg

I'll wish for better luck next year! For now... I'm going to see if I can get over Mosquito pass today.

Live edit: Mosquito Pass is reachable but not passable due to heavy drifts on Leadville approach.

    20200913_160101.jpg

And here's my final high score for 2020:

    20200913_160513.jpg

13,349 ft according to the GPS, at the summit just to the south of the pass. (I think the GPS reads a bit high though...)

    20200913_194235.jpg

    Anyway the view was AMAZING!

My wife says no more sketchy snowy trails, so I think I'll try fishing tomorrow.

    Final edit:

    20200916_113626.jpg

    Damn I love Colorado!

When I visited Ecuador a few years ago, we rode in a Hyundai minivan up to a pass well over 14K feet, on a major highway with lots of traffic, semi-trucks etc. No Tacoma’s there but lots of Hiluxes. Kinda puts things in perspective ... the capital city, Quito, is buzzing with 125cc police bikes and Chevy Aveo taxis, and parts of the city are over 10K feet. My own highest In the Taco this year was pretty modest, 9700’ or so on Steens Mtn. There was a Prius in the trailhead lot too. But it was an AWD Prius :)

Last weekend at White mountain. Summited White mountain on feet after our Whitney Permit was cancelled due to the fires.

I summited Mt Whitney with my dad in 2017 for his 60th birthday, that was a brutal hike (for me). I'm not an avid hiker like he is, he knew to take it slow. I got up to the summit and back to camp about 5 hours faster than him, and boy did I pay for it in the weeks afterward.

One of a kind experience though, hopefully you get the chance to do it again when there aren't all these crazy fires ruining the air quality

Definitely take your time for sure. It would've been my second time going up Whitney, so I wasn't too bummed. Still salvaged the weekend with some off-roading in the White Mountain region and the 16 mile day hike up to White Mountain peak.

When driving back down the 168 into Lone pine, went from blue skies to terrible smoke conditions.

Mt. Whitney. Good times did that trail two years ago and down'd a massive hamburger and fries from the portal store after coming back down.
