It's pretty funny. My father in law has had the cpu in his super duty die twice. Resulting in the truck being dead dead. Ford tech has to come out and reflash the whole thing. The tech said it's actually fairly common

    :rofl:that made me laugh.

I do like that in theory though.... I do kip up in the truck when I'm out camping :D would make my life easier. I am looking at seeing if there's a way I can do that with my passenger side. Would involve taking out a section of the back seat, worth it.

They can be quirky, but at least they're old enough that most bugs and issues are commonly known and easily fixed (relatively at least)

Honestly i'd get another non-rebuildable one if I were you. I really liked the Bilstein 6112/ 5160 combo I had on my FJ. If they had it for my Landcruiser that's what I would have went with.

Or OME BP-51 if you're feeling spendy.

Yeah. It's just time consuming. He was stranded on the road for a couple hrs.

At the time he probably had 20k on a 2017, and this was only a year later.

@mhoadley has had his BP51s for a quick minute now, maybe he'll share some initial impressions or just wait to see them in action on the 20th. Mine are all on their way to me and I should have them before the trip, but don't know if I'll actually get them installed before then.

Yeah but I've blown every Bilstein I've had on my truck! I blew a stock one, I've blown both front 5100's and then the rears blew after I gave them to John.
My OME had been bullet proof for many years (until recently). If I did a sealed shock I'd probably just get another set of them. Problem is that they just don't ride very well. I think they are over dampened on the compression.

I blew two sets of 5100s on the rear of my Tacoma and one of the rear ones I put on my F-150 was leaking when I traded it with only 10,000 miles on it.

I ran the 6112s with no sway bar up front and SPC UCA's, so a decent amount of travel compared to stock. I think the issue is in the rear on tacos a lot of people exceed the stroke of 5100's as they are more or less designed for stock or minor lift. The 5160's are designed for a lifted rear with more weight. I never had any issues with my FJ 5160's. IIRC I had about 60k on my 6112's and 5160's when I sold the FJ and they were all in decent shape corrosion wise, and in 100% working order.

If i was to get a rebuildable shock it would probably be the BP-51's as they seem to hold up to to corrosion better than the desert race shocks. IIRC ADS supposedly has superior corrosion resistance, but i never dug too deep into them. They are also damn expensive. Plus for the Northeast i don't think you really need reservoirs (i know bp51's have them). A larger shock body is likely sufficient even if you're just bombing around NMW/NEK for long periods of time. We just don't have the ambient temps to boil the shock fluid even on long runs over gravel roads or the high speeds like the desert bros can see. Technically the speed limit in the NMW is like 35mph or something right? You're not going to overheat the stock shocks let alone aftermarket at those speeds.

I just got one of my BP51s in from my order and I'm at a loss for words, it's beautiful, like a work of art. I can't wait to get these installed, but I will have to wait until after the 20th, because the spring compressor I'm borrowing from Mike is going to be necessary.

Would the no spring compressor method work with them? I used that method on both my Taco and FJ and it worked flawlessly. By far safer than the autoparts store compressors. And negates any need for special spring compressors to fit between the large shock body and ID of the spring.

I don't think so. From what I understand, I need the spring compressor to help set the preload, not assemble the shock/spring (that's done from the factory).

Edit: Check this thread out, he did it without compressing the springs, but there is potential to mess up the threads if you do it that way.

Ahh, i was thinking they were similar to the non-adjustable ones with a stem that goes up through the shock tower. I'm dumb, it definitely wouldn't work on these.

I finished the install last week and got an alignment Friday, so just a few miles on them so far. My stock suspension had about 120k and it was definitely time to freshen it up.

    128317F3-9D59-4CF2-B74C-1E67F8C3DF65.jpg

Most of my miles so far have been on road with the exception of a quick state forest run (limited off roading access in CT.) The truck handles potholes so much better than before; like a night and day difference. And it rode like a dream through the forest roads. Im eager to get it on the dirt again soon.

Setting the preload was a learning experience. Ive read about people doing it without a compressor but for what you spend on these, do you really want to risk it (They are aluminum). Due to the size of the shock, I had clearance issues with the compressor. I figured it out eventually (got some tips for you on this Eammon).

Im pretty sure ARB is still getting their rebuild program going, but im psyched that they came with a 3 year /40k warranty.
