What kind of paint to cover stock rims?

What kind of paint do i use if i want to color my stock trd off road rims in black? i want them flat black or gloss black, either one is fine to me, most preferrably gloss.. if anyone has any questions, let me know. thanks: )

 

Wet sand em' first with a 400 grit. Get as much gloss off as possible. Then a light coat of Rustoleum primer & then 2 coats of Rusto gloss black. Let dry, enjoy.

and it comes out looking perfectly good? did you do the inside of the wheel also?

Back in the day (late 80s) when I was blacking out all my rims I used engine enamel because of its high-temp adhesion properties, it is less likely to peel because don't forget those wheels spin very fast-hense constant major windage. I would google the proper procedure for surface prep too

 

Wheels take alot of abuse- I would look into powder coating or a material which is a more durable finish then the rattle can approach.

 

Here's how mine were done:
1. Wash wheels using SOS pad and water. Mark and remove the weights.
2. Sand with 320 grit wet & dry, don't forget to do the Toyota emblem on the center caps. Mask off the tires.
3. Prime with NAPA 7220 self etching primer, three coats. Prime the backs first.
4. After the primer dries, lightly sand with 600 grit then wash with mild soap and water, dry.
5. Paint with NAPA 7244 Toyota trim black (this is the semi-gloss, like the bumpers and door handles), three coats doing the backs first. A NAPA paint store can put this paint in cans, but using a gun with medium reducer would be better. Prime and paint the wheels standing up on a low table of some sort.

 

Or, you could do any of the above. Powder coating IS best though.

 

I used Duplicolor Wheel Coating. Here were my steps.
1. Wash wheels and let dry.
2. Sand with 400 grit and wipe down with acetone.
3. After acetone dries, tape off the wheel or use the index card method.
4. 3 coats of Duplicolor self-etching primer (very light coats)
5. 2 coats of Duplicolor wheels coating, satin black. (light coats again!)
6. Let cure for a day or so and your ready to go.
If you want the added gloss you could spray them with the clear wheel coating right after the black. And I also found that you need something like rustoleum semi-gloss or gloss for the center caps. For some reason the duplicolor wouldn't stick.
Whatever way you go I'm sure it will look great! Can't wait for pics!

 

I will agree that powdercoating is one of the most durable coatings but when you look at price it was gonna cost me 400+ depending on what powdercoating options I wanted and I painted my rims rattle can method for like 60 for everything and a few hours of my time. And if you get a chip in the powdercoating you have to live with it or get it redone. Get a chip or scratch with rattle can, tape off the small area, sand, spray, done.

 

I used duplicolor engine enamel in gloss black..It lasts for a while with proper prep work.

I'm currently getting my wheels powder coated and picking them up on Wednesday.

 

ok so if i do it, this is what i got out of it... sand the whole rim inside and out with 320 grit san paper, the prime the whole rim inside and out with primer, 2 coats, let that fully dry, sand then wash again, then spray like three rounds of black paint, and then a couple of clear coat? if i am wrong, please tell me what i am missing... dont worry i will acid wash the whole rim front and back when i do this so they will be as clean as they possibly could be

 

Well what I did was sanded with 400 grit, then went on to 600, then 1000. 3 coats of primer, 3 paint, and 3 clear. (Wheels where cleaned before each grit, and right before the first primer)

Make sure you allow enough time for coats to dry. Putting them on too fast will cause problems.

My way is a little excessive, but the paint lasted a very long time.

 

No its totally understandable. how long did it stay on your riims for?

 

They lasted a good year. Of course I had little chips here and there, but when we started to get snow, the salt started eating the paint.

Duplicolor Wheel paint or Plasti Dip if you dont want them to be permanent. FYI if you use plasti dip do not do any sanding!

 

i want them to be more sperminent because im keeping my truck for as long as possible and if i want different, im sure someone would switch stock for black haha

 

powder coat black is impossible to touch up a chip (and it will happen).<br>
