Drove from Utah to California on Labor Day and the temperature was 100+ throughout the day. Should I be concerned about these temps? This pic was taken while it was 108 and speed limit was 75.

    Thanks!

That is your torque converter temp and your trans pan temp? I’m not familiar with the scan gauge

Top right figure is transmission pan temperature. Bottom right is water/coolant temperature.

Keep it below 220* IMO. I run an ultragauge and if my trans gets above 220* I stop doing what I’m doing and let it cool off (if I safely can). Make sure you manually override down shifts if the truck isn’t down shifting when it should because of big tires. I once found this. And I sometimes refer to it. I live in Phoenix AZ & we see 120*. During those days, I don’t drive up big interstate hills or go wheeling during the daytime

I live in Pennsylvania and on our hottest days (95-100) my coolant temp has only ever been up to 195.8 and my trans pan temps have only been up to 180-190ish when I’m doing 65-75 down the high way , is it bad ? I don’t know let’s see what people chime in at .

those temps are from my ultra gauge , pretty much the same as you have

Thanks for that resource. I was towing a 16’ RV for a short period and trans temp got up as high as 216 while climbing a steep grade. My truck has 95k now so it’s probably time for new fluids.

One time for a camping trip I was going up the 17, big hwy massive grade. At 4am & I freaked out because of my camping gear & 35’s my truck didn’t downshift on its own, so it bogged down & look at this. Look at the speed, RPM & trans temp. I took a pic because it scared me and I manually downshifted & the RPMs jumped and the speed jumped and temps dropped. Lesson learned. Get a regear & keep an eye on temps and gears on big hills. I have a lightweight setup also. No crazy heavy RTT or whatever. Just simple camping gear up a big grade with 35’s. It was probably only like 85* outside during this shot

Yikes. Did you notice your tranny shifting funny after it cooled down?

Not at all. It was a very momentary spike. As far as I know truck has original trans fluid. 2008 with now 144k miles. Transmission works perfectly to this day. I will bite the bullet and do a FULL drain and fill someday but not right now.

This is not a issue I deal with where I’m at, but I’m curious. Are the temp sensors physically in the fluid that your taking the temperature of or is it on the outside and your taking a radiant temp reading?

Trans temp is usually a sensor in the pan, bathed in fluid. Coolant temp is usually plumbed into a coolant outlet housing (going to radiator) or cylinder head. It sits in the stream of coolant

Fancier cars may have multiple temp sensors.

The temps in the 1st post look fine to me
