Half acre, 42" Murray. Overkill almost but come fall it's fantastic for leaves. As @Pugga and @MikeyMcFly can attest, the recycling center is 3 houses up the street so I just dump the bins into the bed and idle it up the street every few times. Still have a self propelled that I use on days it isn't roasting out or I'm not in a hurry..at the least I have to use it to get in close around the garden, greenhouse, berry planters, and *ahem* :rasta:

i have a 4yo Deere x350 with a 42” on 1.5 acres. Sometimes kick myself for not getting a 48” or 52” but the difference in price for the bagger was like $800.
Couple more trips to the grass pile makes up for the cost.

I'm looking at a 50 inch zero turn next year. Most likely a Cub Cadet, Ferris, or Beast with a 23-26 hp Kawasaki.

buddy of mine just got a Wright ZTO with the Kawasaki motor and loves it. My Deere has a kawi motor and it starts up sounding like a dirt bike but never gives me any issues. I could’ve saved about a grand and bought a zero turn but the hill to the lower barn garage is too steep according to the Deere dealer.

I’ve been keeping my eye on the Deere and kubota subcompact prices to upgrade to something that is more useful to manage our land / driveway. I figure if I am getting taxed for it, it might as well be used.

Do it, zero turns cut out so much time. Even staying in the residential models. I have a 61" commercial mower and I have never regretted it. I might be mowing more than most you guys though. Between work and my house I'm probably cutting 4-5 acres a week.

I wouldn't buy a Deere, even tho they are great, unless I had to. Their stance on customers servicing their own products disgusts me and they are the biggest leader of that bullshit in the lawn/AG industry. FUCK John Deere.

Kubotas are great, don't pass over Kioti, Mahindra, New Holland or Massey Ferguson if you have any local dealers. Kioti has a great rep, Mahindra while at first didn't, seems to have really gotten their stuff together and I've been happy with mine. If I had no budget concerns I probably would have went with a kubota.

My kid will mow the lawn IF I get a more fun lawn mower...That's what I've been told...But if I had a more fun mower then I would want to mow...Catch 22..

It's not how fast you mow, it's how you mow fast

My dad did that to me. I was tasked with mowing the lawn all through high school and college. As soon as I graduated and moved away, he bought a zero turn and gets it done in about 1/3 the time.

I have had the same briggs&stratton craftsman walk behind mulcher for 17 years now :) ...Change the oil once in a while, bang out the air filter and sharpen the blade at the start of the year...1 drive wheel replaced...Believe me it LOOKS like it needs to be replaced but it still cuts like the day I bought it and that's what I need it to do.

    all this mower talk...

I've had spare blades for my Deere for literally 7-10 years, that I've been meaning to install before every season... They're still unopened in the box

100% correct sir. Doing it wrong and going too fast without a certain blade speed will rip your lawn and not cut it.

I used to work in the Lawn and Garden Department of Sears from 2005-2010 for a fun, after Full time job, type of job selling all lawn and garden equipment. Craftsman of old was made to last, they were made by electrolux. Then they sold out in 2009 to MDT.......then it was all downhill from there. I would not by a Craftsman now to save my life. My 42 inch deck rider is a 2005 Craftsman that is still kicking......it is getting very tired though.

We had a 25hp Craftsman from the early 2000's. I loved that thing!

I have a modest size lawn. Mow with a Husqvana, self-propelled, AWD with a Honda engine. It’s a standard rotary type. The self-propelled function is awesome. I have a section of lawn with a steep grade and it zooms right up. Runs like a champ. Best mower I’ve ever owned.

I've got a mid-1990's snapper commercial chassis snowblower that's still kicking. Every few years I change the oil. Grease the zerks once a year, and put it away with stabil fogging oil and it never gives me any issues.

I'm actually surprised. When we got our house I got the cheapest non self propelled mower I could. I think it's a Yard Machines. I have done literally nothing to it besides the spark plug once in 7 years. It still starts up first or second pull. Same as the snowblower at the end of the season i run it dry, then stall it out with fogging oil and it never has any issues.

Back when I was working at sears in the 2000's we sold the snowthrower attachments for the rider. The small riders had a 42 inch throwing swath and the garden tractors had a 48 inch one. Those things could throw snow 50+ feet.

I never fertilize, water etc...I only put down grub killer...and if I don't mow it every week i have to cut 1/2 rows overlapping because it gets so thick the mower will stall...It's not a horsepower issue...it's a perfect sun/shade/water table...If I wanted a super lawn I bet I could pull it off but I like my darwin lawn

yeah there are sometimes I have to do half passes if I don’t bag it. I used to bag it but don’t anymore.

after this week it will be cool enough and wet enough I can do the clover seed up front. The entire front yard will be clover and I am hoping that will work. I won’t kill the grass so there might be some mixing in there. But here’s hoping that does well for me next year.
