I doubt its a bad thermostat. Usually they work or they don't and it it wasn't opening the car would overheat. In my mind both this and the AC issue are the same. It's a lack of airflow at low speeds and low engine RPM so the mechanical fan can't keep up. Most cars don't have this issue because they have efans.

If his thermostat is not opening freely and it’s only partially opening it could be this kind of a situation, The AC issue is due to the condenser being inadequate for high temperatures. That is a Tacoma thing prevalent in 2016–2017 models

That’s fair. That said, I’ve only had problems during hot+humid days doing trail cleanups in MN and WI. Have not had any issues the last couple of months in the Texas heat. :notsure:

I would blow a gasket if they told me it was normal for my Tacoma to over heat. An over heated engine can lead to a engine failure, so I wonder if they would cover that cost? My 2013 Jeep JKUR pulling my small trailer, went into limp mode climbing out of Death Valley in Sept. Sitting on the side of the road for 15mins and it dropped right back down. Jeep replaced the antifreeze under warranty.

something else to think about, if you are getting you engine that hot out on the trail, what are you doing to the transmission?
my 2006 Lexus GX470 on the trail in 4H at times will get transmission temps of around 240, going to 4L will drop those 20 degs or more.

I have already added a ScangaugeII to my Tacoma, the engine sits around 190 and climbing a high mountain pass will get to around 205, the transmission does about the same.

I can pull 220-230-240f pretty easy pulling hills out here. Low speed is the real killer, with no air over the radiator

Somethings fishy for sure but when i got the vehicle back the paperwork stated "unable to duplicate customers concern" which in the dealer ship world means there isnt a problem. I'll keep an eye out on it and see if it continues. It hasnt returned since and has driven fine over the last 3 days (not saying anythings wrong) but makes it a little harder for Toyota to figure it out.

How much do we save on the raw finish, and when they say hand finish, does that mean no machines? :)

I've probably replaced a half dozen or more thermostats in my life hoping for a cheap fix to one overheating vehicle or another.
While obviously they can fail, ultimately in my experience the thermostat has never been the problem.
Outside of a poorly maintained cooling system, the thermostat is a pretty simple and reliable mechanism.

X3. I've never had a bad thermostat. I check them too, with a small torch, just so I know. Never had one go bad. Did have one explode though because I forgot I put the torch on it! Got too busy reinstalling the new one.

I'd overheat the engine and Warp the head. Then get a loaner for a month and say "I told you so" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@TacomaCali that a bunch of bs. So they admit your vehicle is overheating, test "like vehicle" dont see it over heat and say its normal. I'd do what @Skydvrr said and just let it blow.

I got my car yesterday and the paperwork says it wasnt "duplicated so no issues at this time". I'll probably just have to let my car blow too if it happens again

This sounds like the solution! I recently chased an overheating problem on one of my cars which was solved when I installed an aluminum radiator. I was amazed at the difference just adding that made. I’ll keep this in mind if I ever have this issue or start towing with my Taco (currently my Silverado does 90% of my long-distance towing).

@Johngoesoffroad I went in today to speak to the service manager straight up told me he wasnt going to go back and forth with me and that it "doesnt matter what the TSB says" Because the FTS person said no repairs. I Just called corporate today and their gonna investigate it supposedly. This guy straight up looked me in the eye and said its a normal function, then he said I dont think it is but thats what the FTS guy said ‍:goingcrazy:

maybe the coolant sensor is malfunctioning sending an bad reading, my Honda accord had one like that but it had over 100k miles on itm if it wasn't the sensor would be the thermostat they do stick and have erratic readings from it but mostly happens on old vehicles, if you've made a case about it with Toyota it will always be on file, even after warranty expires

@TacomaCali thats so sh****. Let corporate investigate im sure theyll call you back in to either a different dealer or the same for a re-inspection. I honestly dont think the TSB is related to our concern since it doesnt mention anything about heating. I'm sure since you have a few visits with them their "taking care of themselves" in regards to the lemon law. If they dont perform a repair although you may have multiple visits the lemon law from what i know doesnt apply. I'm sure the service advisor is being told to have you leave as the service manager seems to be fed up with the situation. Only way you'll get a result is if you keep calling. id highly advise you call everyday so they dont brush you off.
