Special ordered Tacoma made in Mexico?

No there's not. Only distributors order from Toyota. Then dealers in 12 different regions order from distributors, one for each region.
When you special order from dealer, they go not to the factory but to their distributor. If the distributor has not ordered what you want, you are shit out of luck. But the good thing is they order about every combo possible so they will reallocate to dealer a special. Dealers cannot go outside of their region either.
As far as Mexico vs Texas, Toyota calls that shot, nobody else. Some models were made in Texas (no more) the others in Mexico. For example all manual trans models were made in Texas, never Mexico.

 

And there are no custom orders for Toyota, it’s all allocation. When you custom order a Porsche, you can literally mix and match everything from engine to the shifter knob color. You can’t even choose interior color in Tacoma.

There's no Toyota custom orders. You wait for the factory to build something close to what you want and then the dealer works to get that truck.

But no old school Ford Mustang style custom ordered option builds.

Your dealer says it's "custom" to make your truck purchase feel special.

 

No lol the dealer ordered from Distributor and Toyota built it for distributor, not dealer or you. And, it had to be something the distributor already had ordered in advance and Toyota just pulled that build up in their schedule.

 

Well no kidding, you can only get what is a option for that model ... BUT the dealer took one of "his" allocation and put in MY exact order you need to know the facts before you start making judgment calls.

Its called a BUILD order for a reason.. and when i bought the truck they told me it will be 2 or even 3 months to get as that is how far back in the line his tag was , he even told me i could make a change up to 30day before it is to get done.

 

Nope, no special orders from the factory, as others have mentioned.

 

The allocation argument, a weekly TW experience. Everyone wants to feel special. And the dealer will gladly whisper the words in your ear to make you feel oh so special

They would have produced that exact truck even if you didn’t order it, it was not a built order, it was just another truck in the production queue.

My 2018 offroad was proudly made in Mexico too.

 

I’ve got a 19’ OR built in Mexico and I guarantee they are built the same, they don’t have world class LEAN method just for american made. Take care of it and it will last.

 

I believe there is a fee for that though. They add it to the destination charge.

 

Anyone mind chiming in on why Toyota does things this way?
For the sake of production efficiency?
I could argue that by allowing custom specific order, they can maximize profit by building more trims and combinations that customers actually like/buy so that the actual transacting price stay high, instead of building awkward trims and combos that are difficult to sell and lower profit by discounting them.

I think few car makers actually make true custom orders. I know BMW, Mercedes and Porsche make custom orders for their high end vehicles. In the base of BMW, you can even go to Germany and pick it up from the factory.

There were some news that new Ford Bronco will also have true custom order.
