I think it does have to do a lot with Kaizen and Six Sigma...maximizing efficiency everywhere possible. Custom orders on the line will slow the production line down XYZ seconds which will add up costs somewhere.

I think they sell fine, and it’s easier, and honestly, there aren’t enough options to make them very much custom anyway.

Simply, factory is building trucks 24/7, they can’t change production pace based on custom orders. For that, factory needs to have free production space that they can squeeze in custom orders, they simply don’t.

Can you order your truck with the new ‘trail rail’ sliders? It’s only available in certain markets.

Can you custom order your off road in lunar rock?

Toyotas ordering system is that you can order the truck with kit a,b,c,d etc bolted on to it. If you want kit d you will have to wait until they are ready to build that specific arrangement In the 1000’s

If u want extra’s such as floor mats, blackout etc that is done at the port or dealer...

    I know the answer.
This system of Toyota>Distributor>Dealer>End Customer started back when every Toyota was built in Japan. Toyota went with a Distributor network, which added options at the port and then sent to dealer, to get by the Chicken tax and establish themselves in the US.
They kept it and it's a model they still use today.
I know for fact that Toyota did not like how powerful the Distributors had become but that was ironed out years ago.
Fun fact: The whole TRD concept was a distributor idea.

It also has to do with quality, everything that is different creates an "opportunity" for a fault. They would honestly be thrilled to make every single truck exactly the same but then not many people would buy them so they have to strike a balance.

You just proved my point exactly.. the dealer will send in your exact configuration to the distributor so that they can send it directly to Toyota. Which in my terms is a custom order.

True, but somehow I do not think Toyota has the world's best production flow management.
Amazon's business is WAY bigger in size and complexity, and yet they manage quite well.
It seems like Toyota take the idea of "if it ain't broken, why fix it" and apply it everywhere

Production line efficiency. This may apply to the Tacoma pros as well but I know that the 4 runner pros start out being completely built as TRD off-road.suspension and tires are off-road specs..
After it rolls off the factory they roll it into a secondary line and strip off the off-road wheels tires , shocls and struts, and skid plate and install the pro suspension, wheels , tires and skid plates. Slap on some black Pro badges and a new grill and $$$ in the bank.
From that and my visits to the San Antonio factory. It is more efficient than interrupting a standardized production line.

allocation is when the vehicle is already in work order with FACTORY options that are already carved in stone and cannot be modified.

custom order is when you get to select odd/unique FACTORY options that aren’t even existent in the current work order.

my definition between the two everybody...

Hawaii has even less options. You can’t even order a truck with different wheels :(

Also hawaii Tacoma’s are sold by Pacific Toyota not USA Toyota, separate companies. So much so that west coast dealers are not allowed to sell to Hawaii residents :(

But my 2020 OR was made in Mexico just like USA’s,

Great definition, as long as you understand you are doing the 1st one when you “order” your Tacoma
