I have an OR and three petals. AFAIK the main body style that does not have a manual option is the DCLB, but doesn't matter which trim

Nice man. I live like 20 mins away from where the Tapatío Factory so when I go down I just bring some back. Was surprised seeing it as I rarely see them much less on this side of the border
Also Tapatío Excelencia is one of the very little percentage of bottles that keeps the same amount of alcohol for both Mexican and US bottles. For example Don Julio 1942 that’s made for exportation comes in 40% while the Mexican ones are 38% which is better tasting

OP money talks. I have a buddy whose uncle is a multi-millionaire. He has his business connections and got Texas to not only build him a custom magnetic grey 1794 PRO with lexus red leather interior (think everything 1794 but with the TRD PRO bed stamp and on FOX suspensions) but as the Trucks finish built rolled out the door he got privilege to drive it to the nearest Toyota Dealership to take part! Talk about $$$$$$$$

Audi does this as well. I did this a few years ago, only way to get a manual. Audi is a true custom order, the dealer hands you a sheet and you start checking boxes of what you want. You can do a yellow and orange interior if you so please. You can even have the car painted any color that is currently available across the model lineup.

So you should be driving an Alabama made Hyundai and you should be writing your forum responses using paper and pencil, since no computers or cell phones are made in the US.

I’m actually disappointed I haven’t seen @TacoBuffet respond. He’s always good at the allocation vs custom order argument threads.

My understanding is they’re not really “building pros” in Texas. They’re simply adding some parts to trucks that are identical to trucks made in Mexico.

Just like with 4runners... they’re all “built” (manufactured) in Japan. And when they arrive port side in the US, they do some mods to turn it into a pro. For example; I just read that the “pros” all arrive in the US with steelies for wheels. Then they install the pro wheels at port, in addition to everything else that’s “pro”.

It’s like ordering a Prinsu Rack and saying it’s a custom order because I asked for the fairing with the light bar cutout.

My T100 was made in Japan, my Tacoma was made in Mexico. I'll hold judgement until my Tacoma hits 240k miles...so about 40 years from now if I'm still around.

Not answering your question directly (or at all), but it’s interesting comparing Toyota to Ford in this regard.

I went and looked at 2020 Ford F-150 Pickups on the local lot. There were like 9 different wheel choices, and 26 different versions of the truck, with all the different interior and exterior options. I couldn’t make heads or tails of any of it. You pick out a truck you like and have no idea of what options might be missing that are available to you in the next truck in the line.

With Tacoma’s, you basically have 3 choices. You can line up 3 Tacoma’s and see all options. You’d have to line up a dozen F150’s to see all the options. And you’ll still be confused and are probably still missing some things.

It’s a totally different marketing strategy. It makes you feel like every truck you look at is different. And you can pick your favorite. You get in and think to yourself “this is the one”.

Conversely, you can see a line up of Tacoma’s on the lot, and they’re all nearly identical, aside from color (and SR5 vs OR vs Pro vs Limited). 4 choices instead of 23.

    Anyone else feel this way?

I get where everyone in the thread is coming from, mostly.

Toyota does not allow you to do a full, truly completely custom order. That is, here is a list of all of the individual options available for the Tacoma, pick them in any combination that you want and we will build that for you.

That said, how custom your order is can vary a lot depending on which distributor you have and/or which region you are in and so on. Toyota USA does occasionally offer some options individually and so on, and you can place an order for a truck - that is, you choose from a specific set of options and packages and they will schedule your truck for production. Would they have made a truck at that point in time either way? Yes. Would it have been in the colour you wanted with the specific packages and options you chose? Unlikely.

An allocated truck that has had the package or factory (not PIO or DIO) options changed to what a customer wants is in my mind definitely an ordered truck. There have always been limitations on what you can actually order from the factory - even back when you could choose any option you wanted. You still weren't going to be able to ask GM to build you a Corvette in Plum Crazy - you had to choose from the list. Toyota just has a smaller list and groups stuff.

In Canada, with some extremely rare exceptions, we do not have individual factory options, ever. Not even on the window sticker as some thing TCI decided and everything has it. It does not happen - everything is in a package unless it's port or dealer installed.

So does Toyota USA allow ordering a vehicle? I would say yes, but it does depend on your definition. What you get to do is choose (from the "list") how you want it built, and Toyota will then build one of the scheduled trucks the way you asked them to. It's not the same as finding a truck that is already built or scheduled to be built with similar specs to what you're looking for and dealer trading or shifting an allocation, etc., it's a somewhat proper ordering process.

No the prices are pretty much the same but the dealer here on Hawaii island adds a line on the window sticker which reads... ‘market adjusted value +$1500’ depends on what stock They have as to what u can bargain with them. I ended up buying from another island last November when we first got the 2020’s msrp -$1200.
Also we don’t get as many option to choose from like tech packages etc and we can’t add certain accessories like add different wheels.

I did try to buy a car from a dealer in Tacoma, Washington, we got to the point where they sent me the final quote And I sent them my drivers license to confirm and that’s when they said they wouldn’t sell me a car because I was a hawaii resident. Toyota USA can’t sell cars to Hawaii residents!

I think i got about as close as you can get for a so called ''special order'' when i had a large dealer ordered my sr5 ac from texas. Dealers couldn't find any tacoma sr5 ac with the options, and exterior color i requested. Between having the truck built with most of the package, and some additional dealer added accessories i was able to receive my truck with just about all that i was hoping to have.
