Don't top off you'll ruin the canister

It is a margin or error for several things

Older vehicles relied on fuel to cool the pump, that's why alot of older guys won't get less than 1/4 tank

I have no idea how or if the pump needs it in these vehicles

Don't wanna be that guy that calls AAA or a family member because " I can make it 3 more days to work" that's just unnecessarily putting you in a weird spot.

Side note whoever has kids or younger family members should harp on the last one. Up until high-school (pretty recent for you old farts) when i was a delivery driver I ran into several younger newer drivers with no gas or oil at night in the middle of nowhere.

From talking to a fuel pump engineer on a ferry tank project, it is not really about the fuel keeping the pump cool. Electric motors run all day long not dipped in liquid. Usually automotive pumps are not directly exposed to fuel and are in some type of fixture. The one on my bike is used in just about every older Ford and GM. The Taco pump itself looks very similar, if not the same. The fuel flows through the pump body:
    upload_2020-9-10_14-23-55.jpg

The real problem is the harsh environment of sucking to prime a dry pump. On the specialized side, there are specs for how long a pump is allowed to run dry, or if they are allowed to run dry at all. Given the nylon impeller system on most automotive LPFPs, I would bet it does not tolerate priming well at all.

Well answered that question way better than. I expected. Good info I figured it did still require fuel to keep the pump cool and lubed but wasn't positive about it in the newer vehicles.

    :hattip: Thanks!

The hot pump arguement just gets ooooollllddd. :D

My average fill up on the Taco is over 18.3gal, similar usage on all our vehicles. I have only messed with the pump on my bike because I wanted to for PM and because it was $30 all in after 100k and 17yrs. :D

Being the rural west, I never let the gauge drop below 1/4. No fun seeing the "No services for the next 70 miles" and the needle is just above E.

How many examples do we need, before we learn, we have to keep the stupid people safe? Larger and larger safety margins, notices, etc etc are baked in to all modern products. The 2023s will have a half a tank when the warning comes on.

It holds 21.1 not counting the filler neck or whatever else fuel goes into, so you still had a bit of reserve.

It just depends on the type of pump, or your definition of burned up. From my understanding, it isn't the motor itself that is an issue. It is what drives it. I used to operate a Zamboni and the wash water impeller would disintegrate if you forgot to turn on your wash water. I believe it is similar with a fuel pump. Although with modern ones, it isn't the end of the world to do it once in a while, but it's still better to not do it.

Oh fuck serious? I've noticed you can get like another almost gallon and a half in the tank after the click if you go slow....Guess I should not do that...

If you can get that much in, then there is less of a worry about fouling the charcoal canister. My MPGs and refill amounts to the first click jive with the 21.1gal tank size. I sometimes put over 20gal in.

Just be careful that you're not getting so much fuel in there that liquid will be forced toward the canister.

I have had cars in the past that would take a lot of fuel past the first click. For me, the Taco seems to be right on without topping off.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
I trust my ScanGauge which shows % of fuel left than the computer guesstimate. On my previous vehicle, there have been numerous times I had 0 miles till empty and still had 5%-7% of fuel in the tank which was verified during fillup. Once that thing is calibrated, what SG shows as burned vs what i put in is within 0.3 gal.
