285/75R16-Stock TRD PRO 2020?

Hey guys,

I'm new to the forums and have been lurking quite a bit. I'm sure I'm beating a dead horse here with this question. However, I just want some feedback from people who have gotten bigger tires on a stock trd pro.

Basically I'm looking at getting 285/75R16. I keep seeing that some people get no rub, others get some.

Should I go for the 285s? Or keep it safe and go with 265/75R16? If I do go with 285s and I get rubbing, what would be the solution?

Sorry, I'm newer to Toyotas, just want some advice from you wonderful people!

 

Yeah it has been beat to death just a smidge. Lol. 265/75 is the safe bet. 285 you most likely will run into rubbing issues. You ask for a solution, well that’s end less to. CMC, trimming, new UCAS, wheel spacers, new
Wheels with different offsets etc. or you can get real lucky and have no rub. Also, maybe consider a skinny 33 (255/85) if you want the 33s. Have fun OP. Certainly addicting once you get into the modding lol. Welcome by the way!! Enjoy that new PRO. Take care.

 

Welcome to TW. I would not rely on those anomalies and rely on the steps we usually follow to avoid the headaches.

Cab mount chop, pinch weld, fender liner trimming or reshaping, suspension upgrade, upgraded UCAs, and a good alignment.
Also depends on your lifestyle.

I'm running a l.5 spacer lift. And 1.25 wheel spacers and I'm still gonna do a cmc. I'm going to go with 285 but I wonder if I could go bigger

 

I have a non-pro but have the pro wheels and less lift than a pro and put Toyo MT 285/75/16's on last week. They didn't rub until I had it loaded and then it was minor and trimming plastic or heating it up and moving a little bit would have fixed it. I didn't do either since I was planning a 2.5 inch lift anyway. I did watch a couple good youtube video's on trimming as well, seems very simple.

I did have 265/75/16 BFG KOs on before the new tires and lift and I think they look to small, the 285's without a lift looked a little on the big size. I think an inch more lift front and back on your Pro with 285's would be perfect.

Below is what mine looked like with 3/4 inch lift and then the new 2.5 inch lift so you can see the comparison, I think the 3/4 lift is what your Pro would look like.

 

Thanks for replies! I’m not really looking to lift atm. Since I have a lift already. Really don’t want a spacer lift as I’ve heard bad things.
Well maybe I’ll just have to go 265/75r16. Those 285 look good tho!

 

I recently got 285/75R16 on a 3" lift/level kit with stock wheels. They clear fenders/frame at full lock with no trimming, but completely rub the upper control arm. I can't drive it and have to wait on spacers to clear UCA. Looking back should've gone with 255/85R16 (the skinny 33), but everything should work after spacers.

Note: I have a 2014 (2nd gen) Tacoma, but almost everything I've seen translates between 2nd and 3rd gens.

 

the 255/85r16 are appealing! Any rub on stock trd pro???

 

You’ll need new UCAs. 2.5 of lift or below might be fine. How’s your alignment? And do you get crazy bump steer?

 

From what I have read here and doing some of my own research.
265/75/16 is the best size with stock suspension no lift.

Offset and spacing above 265/75/16 will lead to rubbing and the need to trim.

I have 2.5in lift and I did it without UCA's, I do have some sloppy feedback in the bumps under 45mph so I went ahead and ordered the SPC UCA's. From what Toytec told me and the info on this forum I need more caster than I can get out of the stock UCA's.

I'll report back next week after they're in and re-aligned.

 

SPC’s have been great for me. Having greasable ball joints are also a plus. Aim for: Camber=0-0.2, Caster=3+(I’m at 4.1 both sides) and Toe=0. My truck feels dialed in.

 

Ya thanks for the numbers, I found on the alignment thread everyone is having luck with Toe - 0, Camber - 0, Caster 3+. One thing I read is the higher Caster number like yours might make the steering tighter than it should be, how is yours?

 

Takes bit of an effort and more revolutions to to turn the wheel but nothing to complain about. Feels better than factory specs on highway too.

 

Are you going to be running stock rims? Lots of people seem to be running 33s on stock pros these days with minimal rub, likely needing some heat gun action or minor trimming. If you’re on the fence about going 285s, I’d say just do it. Better to go the size you want and have to do a bit of modification than to go a size smaller and regret not going larger.

 

So Just got back from alignement after installing the SPC UCA's, I'm the same as you 4+ Caster, 0 Camber, 0 Toe. I still have a little bit of feedback in the wheel over holes or seams in the road to you?

 

I have a 2017 pro completely stock and am running 255/85/16 with no issues. Looks good in my opinion and has made a huge difference offroading.

 

I have 255/85s. Definitely recommend if you want a bigger tire with no lift. Went wheeling this weekend and had no rub. They are thinner than 285s but look better in my opinion
