Snow tires for her car might be good, but a decent set of ATs on the taco are totally fine for SLC winters. We usually get meaningful snow in the valley a handful of times at most and generally a couple inches at a time.

If you ski, you'll need M+S rated tires (pretty much all ATs have this) or chains to get up the cottonwoods, through Parleys/Provo Canyons, etc. Not usually enforced, but they've been patrolling more due to incidents.

Welcome! Once you're here we are welcoming but don't tell anyone else to move here. ;P

That said, I have a set of wildpeaks on my truck and they've been phenomenal. I'm also in Lehi. You'll have an occasional day during the winters that are pretty bad but usually the weather here is fairly good during the winters. Other than the inversion. @Gunshot-6A said it well though. snow tires for your wife's car wouldn't hurt. Utah county area seems to get less snow than salt lake county. Traverse mountain seems to keep SLC pretty contained.

All season tires do fine for most cars, like @Gunshot-6A said there are usually only a few days where the roads get really bad. My wife has always done great with the all seasons. Knowing how to drive in it is more important. Snow tires won’t hurt if you’re more comfortable going that route.

Pro tip: Don't run stop signs.

Poor 3rd gen 4runner in pretty mint condition met it's demise last night vs a Honda CRV at the intersection up the street from my house. Body damage wasn't terrible, but the swimming pool of fluids under both vehicles didn't look good. Radiator and wash fluid each at the very least.

Everyone was fine, and my taco's LED strobe functions did great till Fire/5-O got there.

All fine in the long term, but one driver was pretty rattled from his curtain airbag deploying. Real amazing part is when I got there from one street down, half the neighborhood was out seeing what was up, and nobody had the forethought to like... "call 911".

Switchpro controllers have a flash / strobe function if you double tap a switch. Old setup, but you get the gist.

Thanks guys for responding, sounds like winters are like Boise pretty mild with some bad days.
and don't worry I've seen what happens when word gets out, Boise is heading down hill now.
I'll probably just use Wildpeaks and I'll probably get some snow tires for my wife since she's never lived in the snow so she can be more comfortable on the road when there's snow.
Do you guys have any shops you prefer and trust for getting your truck worked on/buying parts from?

All the training I've ever gotten (lifeguard, firstaid, cpr, etc)...you were always told to specifically call someone out of a crowd and command them to call 911. but of course...someone has to be in charge of that.

jesus that's a bright setup! but i love it!

worked on? I take mine to the stealership because I get a deal for oil changes. but most everything else I just do myself. buying parts...depends on the part. tires? I always go to discount tire. they've been really good to me.

Yeah, I rolled up and kinda got annoyed for a sec. Really is true about crowd "diffusion of responsibility".

Back when I had my car (FWD), I never ran a snow tire and never got stuck. If you plan on heading up in the mountains it would probably be a good idea. Watts Automotive is close to you. All they do is buy and sell lifted trucks. They are pretty cheap to get work done, I only had a slightly bad experience because I didn't clarify how/what I wanted to be done, but overall was happy with the work and the price. The Yoto guy is down in Provo, he does good work but I think I heard he's not seeing any new customers right now.

Things to do...you're very close to AF Canyon. You can drive up there and hang out at one of the reservoirs (if you can find parking), go deeper in the canyon and offroad/camp (I'm heading up there tonight actually), drive the Alpine Loop. Some food joints I like in the area...JCW's (burgers), Seven Brothers (burgers), Mo Bettas (Hawaiian BBQ), Straptank Brewery - food is mediocre but they have some tasty in house brewed beers. R&R BBQ pretty good. Thats about all I can think of off the top of my head right now.

Taxes are lower than most parts of CA, although property taxes are climbing.

Laws, well if you can abide by 5% beer in the grocery stores, and having to go to the ABC store and pay an arm and a leg for everything else, then its pretty run of the mill. And prepare for way more stuff to be closed on Sundays than you're used to.

I like straptank's beers. There's also a "'bout time pub" near straptank. decent bar food and good drinks as well.

The switchbacks going down black bear are super tight and the pucker factor is real. Not really technical, but when all you can see is sky over your hood, a spotter is real handy.
