Muscle cars may look better, but honestly the fit and finish is pretty terrible by modern standards.

I remember someone giving me the keys to their 2nd owner minty 396 SS Chevelle that had never been restored in 1998. I walked away totally not impressed, the car was fun, but it did nothing for me. My Mk1 GTi with a Neuspeed shirt shifter and 16v Scirocco brake conversion and a host of suspension mods was more engaging to drive.

So you have a better car than one made 40-50 years ago? Wow. Imagine that.

32 pages and not a single mention of how much forced induction helps at altitude... sure, Tacos are slow. Everyone knows that. I didn't buy this truck to be a drag racer.

But I live at 7,000 feet and routinely drive at 9, 10, 11k including on very steep grades. 3rd gear, pedal to the mat, tons of noise and getting passed by diesels towing Airstreams. Typically, forced induction experiences much lower percentage losses at altitude than natural aspiration. So, if the gains are 33% at sea level, it could easily be a net gain of 40+% for those of us up high. I am certainly intrigued, but another $7k-plus into a 2020 Taco gets you a whole lot of Raptor if these Carvana threads are to be believed.

265/75R16 Wildpeak AT3W, Softopper, Kicker speakers, shift knob, Ventvisors, Tint, Husky Weatherbeaters, Hondo Garage radio knobs. The to do list: Bilstein 6112/5160, 3 leaf add-a-leafs, lights, alu skid, PRP seat covers...
I like all all enthusiast cars and trucks. The Chevelle SS 454 was a monster and still is but not gonna beat a Type R by as much as you think. Multiple testers have tested sub 5 second 0-60 times, solid mid 13's in the 1/4 mile, and a 170 mph top speed. Still a different era. I'd take a Chevelle SS 454 over a Type R for a fun toy tho lol

WRT altitude, both superchargers and turbos will do well, with a couple caveats though (basically in favor of turbos).

N/A engines lose power as air gets thinner, because they like compressed air. Superchargers raise the ceiling for this threshold, sure, because they're compressing the air, but they have a fixed gear ratio, and so will eventually run out of air so to speak.

Turbos spin faster to achieve the desired/set boost pressure. A supercharger cannot "just spin faster", and so there's that aforementioned threshold where you begin to see diminished returns. Let's say you target 10psi at sea level. At significant elevation, a SC may be able to only provide 3-5psi. It's trying its hardest to compress that air but it can only do so much. A turbo will just keep spinning faster until it's providing that targeted pressure. It's working harder, sure, but it'll be within operating limit/range and do what it's supposed to do: provide the demanded boost pressure

I have a feeling that the 3rd gen in the big scheme of things will be a malaise era truck when the 4th gen comes out.

I think the 4th gen is either going to kick ass or suck wind. Nothing in between.

I got the email too today from them saying ready for ordering, which also included the above posted dyno chart.

Wasn’t blown away, especially since the 2nd gen SC made notable more torque and was
supposed to be a much older style/less efficient SC design. Also the big HP gains are very much mainly in the higher 4500-6000rpm range.

I will give it that the torque, well not nearly the 50% gain Magnuson posted on their website for many months (why all of a sudden a huge drop in gains?), is linear but the graph starts at 3k rpm and it looks like it drops notably prior to that.

The similar TVS1900 kit for old JK 12-18 Jeep produce much more power then our Tacos.

I really hope that their will be other ways of improving the power output safely and reliably for the trucks, like a smaller pulley, fueling etc. Because right now Magnuson seems like they came up short, especially since they advertised 50%+ gains they posted for months on their site just to change it to 30% and their posted dynos seem to me like it’s even less than that.

This was a worst case scenario for me, if the dyno numbers were great, it was an easy no question about it purchase for me, if they were super bad, it was an easy no go, but now they are just “meh” and I feel more confused then ever :/

What dyno chart are you referring to? The one drawn in crayon?

stay on the twin snail thread if you only want to bash. Even Mat had crayon drawing - even some of his "dyno" charts are pdf downloads. At least Magnuson is smart enough to feather Mat's pocket and use his software.

    I'm not bashing.

The "dyno chart" posted was so smoothed and cropped it was basically useless.

    Edit.... This one:

Mat posted actual dyno graphs. The fact that they were low res is besides the point. They may have been difficult to read, but at least they were real data.

That's the one I assumed you meant, thanks. To me, it looks like the marketing team got a hold of a preliminary dyno chart.

No problem. I really hope your right, cause compared to other dynos running the TVS1900, it’s disappointing.

I really like Magnuson and hope that they will surprise us all with new tunes which produces much better numbers, cause the TVS1900 should easily beat out the 2nd SC in both HP and TQ, and right now it’s not.

Their hardware is capable, no doubt there. What is holding them back now is their calibration and fueling. I hope they have a very good plan in place to solve both.

The only official dyno of any type I've seen from Magnuson is this teaser from a few years ago, which shows the engine making almost 300ft/lbs of torque at 3,000 rpm's. Though we don't know if it's at the hub or wheel, or if it's std or sae numbers these numbers are in line with what a lotus exige/tvs1900 can do with its 3.5l v6. These compressors make 500+ whp on LS motors they're going to have no problem making good power on the Tacoma, only thing holding it back as ovtune pointed out is getting enough fuel, which currently seems to be quite expensive. Eventually Di injectors will be cheaper and people will have 500hp Tacoma's running e85 and doing lots of doughnuts to non-licenced music....literally doughnuts for days.

Assuming that was legit, it makes me wonder how they achieved this without being able to tune the stock ECM on stock components. Complete ECM replacement? I don't doubt the results, but like you I question the conditions.
