I dont think it gives me better hp, it does give me better fuel economy, but to the tune of maybe 1 mpg. I've been calculating every tank since I had the truck, and have gone months between fuels for average. Truck runs much better on premium, so thats what goes in. Im sure with a larger engine you wouldn't notice a difference, but with the Itty bitty 2.7, a small increase (or decreas as i found with at tires) in performance is very noticeable

I love my 17 5MT, just gotta beat the engine up like it owes you money and it'll perform as intended. Its bad... but its not THAT bad... (no idea how the automatics are)

Not just your mind brother - she definitely purs and premium fuel helps big time, especially from a stop with the AC on - you’ll notice you won’t have to slip the clutch as much. Way less knock at low low rpm. I don’t notice a difference on the freeway.

people simply don’t understand the torque curve of these engine.

old pic, new ones with bigger meats coming soon!

So 5% better gas economy for a fuel that costs 20% more....

And no, it is not giving you better fuel economy. Just the air temperature, wind, etc will cause a shift larger than 1mpg difference. What you are seeing is basically the noise in the data.

I mean going 80mph is not really a big accomplishment. How many minutes it takes to reach 80mph though?

if you’re too broke to pay for premium, you shouldn’t be in a 30k+ (35k+ for v6) Tacoma. Seriously cracks me up when people say that as if it’s a waste of money even though I can feel my truck run better at low rpm under load.. like the folks who put regular in a Benz like idiots to save a buck or two lol.

screw fuel economy, we aren’t driving a Prius.

Hope Ziebart will get you a new frame when it rots. Saw a video of a Silverado with that stuff and it trapped moisture inside and rotted the frame quicker. No way to remove it either.

what he’s saying is who cares? An extra few seconds to reach 80 with IMO a motor that will easily last 300k with the way they I take care of my vehicles, not to mention it’s mated to a trans, driveshaft, tcase, rear diff, etc that is built for v6 power thus making those components last even longer when subjected to the 2.7s lower power output.

definitely not for the IG squad who refuse to regear and need more power, but this thing is plenty for me and a beast offroad with my gearing

    to each their own

Except premium fuel does nothing different for your engine and everything you claim it does is basically in your head. The whole “I feel...” argument is a metric as useless as it gets.

Mercedes need premium fuel because it uses a true high compression engine tuned for fuel that doesn’t pre-ignite. Tacoma engine does not, it starts compression with valves partially open.

In seriousness. Maybe what I “feel” is just that, and if that makes me the biggest idiot on TW, so be it brother - I don’t know enough about compression and pre-detonation to make a give an intelligent rebuttal.

Is what it is - again, couple extra bucks at the pump isn’t something I’m concerned about, especially with a fuel rewards card that already drops me down to regular price anyways.

I'm not knocking you I4 guys but I like my V6. :) I don't care if it lasts 300K or not, I usually get a new vehicle way before that.
That said, OP congrats on the new truck!

I had 4 Jeep Cherokees with the 4.0 inline 6 cylinder. All would spark knock under acceleration or climbing a hill when using 87 octane. Ran 89 octane in all of them and never heard a sound unless the fuel was sub-par. I won't purchase gas at Sheetz for that reason, decent pizza however... To be clear here, the engines didn't "run better" on 89, they just didn't spark knock. OP enjoy your new truck!

Boom! This is what I hear using 87 and don’t hear using 91

Spark knock (pinging, pinking) sounds like a metallic chatter or clatter from the engine usually heard when the engine is under load such as accelerating or climbing a hill. You will often hear this in manual transmission vehicles when they are in too high a gear for the road speed commonly referred to as "lugging" the engine.

For example: When climbing a hill and the vehicle speed and engine rpm begin to fall no matter how much throttle is applied the first sounds will be pinging followed by that awful vibration or resonance as the drive train tells you that you should have shifted down quite a while ago...

Cars from the late carburetor era (1980's) could ping when cruising too, caused by the lean mixture calibrations they were set at to try to make 1960's design engines be more emissions friendly.

Thank you for the detailed explanation of what I was describing I hear when my 2.7 is under load at low rpms essentially being lugged. 3.91 gearing in a Heavy 3rd gen means I hear this a lot if I’m below my torque curve.

I notice this is reduced when using 91 octane.
