I use mine just about always in the driveway to start without having to climb in. That gives the interior time to cool down before I go anywhere, without oven mitts to hold the steering wheel. The light stays on until you shut your truck off. When you restart normally by engaging the clutch, the light stays off.

Toyota 4x4 trucks with stick shifts have had clutch starter cancels as far back as 1984 AFAIK. I honestly don't know if the 1st gen 1979-1983 had it or not but it may have still not had a clutch safety switch in the first place.

I drove my 1991 about two blocks home using the starter when the timing chain broke. At that point the engine was wrecked anyway and it seemed too close to bother with a tow truck.

Use the heck out of it off highway. Back when everyone still had manuals it was one of the first things you learned, just let it stall in gear on rocks and restart in gear. It's easier on the truck than burning up the clutch trying to feather it, prevents you from rolling backwards or trying to work the parking brake and ride the clutch.

My 92 4Runner 3.0 V6 had it, 79 HiLux 20R did not. Lots of good videos showing CSC working, tho those rigs look extra modified.

If you can't figure this out you shouldn't be driving manual.

I’m really glad I saw this before my recent trip. I made the mistake of stopping on a really steep section of Imogene Pass and I got myself in a bit of a spot where I didn’t want to roll back and was having trouble getting started. CSC worked like a champ. The truck rode the starter for a few feet and then the engine fired right up when the incline leveled out a bit.

Its cool Toyota is still installing it after all these years. My ‘89 had it, but I never knew what the true purpose of it was back then.

So I got to try out the CSC feature (‘19 TRD OR six speed stick) a few times last weekend and man, works like a champ. Thanks much for the explanation.

Question to you all is how many times can you rely on this without destroying your starter and/or flywheel? The interwebs provide contradictory answers, but most say negative effects to both. Your thoughts/experience?

I've been doing it for years with no issue. That's with the factory starter and flywheel that have over 300k miles on it.

Upgrading your starter wiring helps (assume it's the same for the newer trucks). I would give your starter and wire a chance to cool down if you're driving on the starter for any length of time.
