Just completed my first oil change and realized when I was draining the pan there was no washer on the drain plug. I’ve never let Toyota dealers mess with it so it had to come from the factory like this. Put one on the drain plug and anticipate no issues (no leaks from before either). Has anyone else seen this?

Are you sure that it isn't stuck to the pan? I've had this happen on my truck.
Also, it didn't stick to the pan and THEN fall into the draining vessel?

I checked both, didn’t seem to be leaking either. Weird!

Ive seen oil pans with no gasket and no leaks. The problem is when there is no gasket, there is a risk of pulling threads of the oil pan.

It’s probably stuck to the pan like mine was. Use a PLASTIC trim tool Or scraper to knock it free. It almost fooled me into thinking it was a lip on the pan

Beware of doubling up on the crush washer. Never heard a good thing about it.

I have had them stuck before too, almost felt glued on and had to use plastic trim tools to get them off.

Lots of stuck crush washers over the years..

Had the o-ring off the screw on oil filter stick to the block of my F-150 once, too.
Without noticing I just screwed the new can on. That's a mistake you'll notice quickly, at least on that truck.
Blew so much oil so quickly it was spaying out the hood and rolling down the grille and quarter panel.

That was a serious problem with the design in the Liberty CRD I used to have. It had a drain plug with hex key head and very few threads. Add an aluminum cast oil pan and you got easily torn threads. Fixing an oil pan isn't always cheap. That why I put an Fumoto valve on it.
I think I may do the same with the Tacoma. It also makes changing the oil easier and a little bit cleaner as the oil drains straight down.
The thing is I'm not sure what the dealership will say when I go to get my 2 oil changes from them.

I understand. I do many Honda oil changes with aluminum oil pans and I see so many damaged oil pans threads from over tightening. That’s why I’m glad Toyota used a steel oil pan but the threads are much shorter than the new Honda’s. I’m also thinking about using the fumoto valve but worried it might open up and leak everything out.

I had it on the Jeep over 10 years and no problem with it opening on its own. The valve actually has a lever that you need to pull first and then rotate it to open the valve. There is also a Plastik Clip they sell now that you can place over the lever, I think it may even be included now with new ones.
I even went off road in the Jeep with it on. It was above the skid plate on the Jeep, as long as you get the short one it should be good. I would not get the one with the long nipple for a hose, I think it would hang down too low.

Funny story. I was helping my buddy change the oil on his neon. He removed the old filter and put the new one on, all good. Once he started the engine, the oil went all over the place! The old gasket was stuck to the engine. He installed the new filter without realizing it, it was great cleaning everything up.

I've done thousands of first oil changes. This is extremely unlikely as it would have leaked.

100% sure there was never a washer. Plug was wrenched on pretty good (more than 30 ft lbs). Surprisingly never leaked. I left the skid plate off and drove around the neighborhood after the change and all seems good. I’ll keep an eye on it for future leaks.

Blacked out emblems, mudflaps, tint, nothing crazy.
It mightve just been good to go without the washer. The factory probably forgot to install one. My wrangler doesnt use one. Manual doesnt call for it, and it doesnt leak. My tacomas fumoto valve came with a fiber gasket though.

I have stated on this thread that my truck came without a washer.

I was wrong. I just did my second oil change and I mistakenly put a washer over the first washer that came from factory.

So the first washer was stuck and I thought it was part of the pan.

last weekend I removed both and installed a new one.

So for the ones that state that truck came without washer, double check.
